Ensemble

Chapter 3

Andromeda and Hypnos entered the parlor and were greeted by an unusual sight. Lady Solo, her husband Lotte, and a strange dragon seated at a small table. The dragon looked at them curiously, but did not say a word. She only went about her own business, if peculiar, returning her gaze to the table as she fumbled with a deck of cards. Sensing the tension in the room, Solo spoke up.

"Welcome, friends! We are so glad you could make it! Please, sit down, make yourself comfortable. Tea?"

Hypnos shook his head, and shot a glare at Andromeda who was just about to say that he would actually love some tea right now. He slumped slightly lower in his chair in response, and Hypnos turned back to his gracious hosts, inwardly rather triumphant over a mere cup of tea.
"My lady, I am most honored to be here in the presence of you and your husband. However, if I may ask, why were we invited to this event?"
Lady Solo smiled, her head recoiled into her fur collar. "Well, you must know that our families used to be quite good friends. I remember playing with you often as hatchlings, Hypnos."
He smiled in return, a quite forced-looking expression. "Oh yes, how could I forget? We got into so much trouble as children. However, we have not spoken in many years. You must excuse my wondering why contact me now."

"Oh, you'll see in due time." Solo replied mischievously. This sent chills down Andromeda's back. Hypnos too was unusually unnerved by her tone, but displayed none of his concern outwardly.
Lotte nodded, a soft smile spreading across his face. "It is a surprise. We hope you will be pleased with its outcome."

Suddenly, the dragon sitting at the table turned to face the others. "Go, eat. Make merry. I am nearly ready."
Her voice was cold. The way she talked made you want to follow her every instruction. Something about her presence was very persuasive.
And so, the four dragons rose from their seats and started for the dining room wordlessly, as if compelled by something beyond their control.
