“Am I out of time-out now, ‘Gles?”

There’s a pale cloud of smoke gathering in the center of the room, settling just beneath old wooden rafters. Wisps of blue and soft ocean green pour steadily out the mouth of a similarly colored Spiral. Until now-- or, more accurately, for the last twenty minutes, after Shingles banished him there-- he’s remained a quiet lump in the corner of the room, settled on a pile of rags and swallowing deep lungfuls of smoke. His movements are slow and loose. His eyelids are heavy.

“I dunno,” comes a sharp reply from the opposite side of the room, somewhere over near the tables filled with boxes and vials of god-knows-what and don’t-even-ask. “That depends. You done being obnoxious?” The tone is harsh, but Thyme can still hear the faintest of smiles in her voice.

He stretches and takes another slow drag. “Y’know I don’t mean to bother you,” Thyme says, lifting himself up and out of the pile. “I’m just interested in what you do. I don’t know what half that **** is.”

“Probably best that you don’t,” Shingles laughs, and it crackles like dying embers. “You might not come near this place again,” she throws a look over her shoulder. “Now that I think about it, maybe I should tell you what this **** is. It’d keep you out of my hair.”

Thyme fakes a pout. “Awh, ‘Gles, I thought we were friends,” he whines, thumping his head dramatically onto the workbench. Shingles gently whacks him on the nose with a bundle of old papers, and he laughs. Faint rings of smoke escape from his throat. Thyme rolls his head to the side, watching as Shingles measures out shimmery black powders and plucks leaves off of their stems. “F’real though. It’s impressive.”

“Finally, someone who appreciates my hard work.”
