Biography
If you're uneasy around Vin, you have the right idea. Formcasting is not something to be scared of, in itself; it's the practitioners you must watch. And of course, Vin is the type to make any easy target pay a marked-up price for his services, then "forget" to tell them the consequences. Sure, his smile looks genuine, and sure, you've transformed the way you wanted. But you'll find it's not just treasure you gave up--some piece of you has disappeared into the nether, never to return.
Some dragons lose one of their senses, others become crippled, and all become altered from what they were. This is a natural result of formcasting--to gain change, one must make a sacrifice, whether it is your sight, your ability to fly, your uncanny instinct, your memories of a childhood friend. Any decent formcaster would tell you that, and let you choose your sacrifice.
Vin doesn't bother with decency, at least not these days. All for the clinking in his pockets, he's willing to ruin a few lives and get out of town before the inevitable, rage-induced mob comes banging at his door.
One could hardly number the towns he's left victims in, leaving him the poster child example of a formcaster without scruples, a pariah in his own mage's society. Not that he cares. Could the others say they were making as much bank as he was? No? Well then, whatever.
Vin has also formcast on himself, although it was only once. The ebon antlers that grow from the crown of his head are the sole alterations he ever made, something that stands to represent his change from a moral young caster to someone willing to make a quick buck over someone's else sorrows. He wasn't always this way; but now, it is too late to go back. As Hina well knew.
Hina is Vin's ex-lover, but before that she was and is a caster of quiet renown, a kind dragoness who would allow even the poorest to ask of her favors, whether involving her magic or not. Vin used to adore her for it, and sometimes helped. The two were constant companions, a traveling pair that would rush to aid anyone in distress.
The sound of Hina and Vin's laughter, intermixed and joyful, would be the accompaniment to their travels. They got along well, these two--once, they had even dreamed of children together. A gentle life in some clan, without worries or fears.
It has been a long time since then. A long, long time.
