the pretender

A queen sits in her castle, her grin as wide as it is fake. She is adored, those lucky enough to be in her presence grasping onto every word she says with barely concealed adoration. One day she knows the charade will end, the strings on the mask she wears finally breaking loose, and that is when her subjects will leave her. But for now, she shines, radiant and adorned in jewels that are bright enough to make her forget, even if just for a moment.

(Her kingdom, of course, is as false as her smile.)

Perhaps the aureate Skydancer believes her own lies now, having spun so many stories throughout her lifetime. Or, perhaps she simply does not believe in anything anymore. It has become increasingly difficult for her to remember who she really is underneath the dozens of disguises she has adopted and discarded: a desperate nobody-turned-conman, using falsehood after falsehood to trick and leech off of others to survive. In her youth, it had been easy to forge a new identity every time she ran into trouble and had to flee another clan of susceptible victims, aided by her honeyed words and perceived innocence. But the years have worn on the dragon; her words no longer carry the same pathos and persuasion they once did, and her feathers no longer display their formerly healthy sheen of youthful vitality.

In public, she struggles to maintain the façade of Estelle, a confident, god-chosen queen born to lead. In private, she staggers under the sheer weight of her lies and the effects they have had on the dragons around her. The lifestyle she was forced into and chose to continue has isolated her from any "friends" Estelle may have had, and so it is only now, after years of discarding dragon after dragon along with her identities, that she finds herself missing their company. The irony of it all is not lost on Estelle as she ruefully reflects on her life so far. And though Estelle is adored by her oblivious subjects, she is acutely aware of the fact that the day when all of this catches up to her is drawing ever nearer -- and she is terrified of what that may bring.
