bio

There are many secrets that this forest hides. All forests do. Of course, you could say that forests were nurturing and kind; a place to find food and water, a place to find shelter, and a place to find friends and companions. And no one could deny that truth.

But look at how thick this forest is; how the trees stood tall and solemn, how the flora twisted and turned, engulfing nearly every visible surface. Look at how dark this forest is. What little, precious light breaks through the canopy and shines on this mossy floor is merely a trap. Step one foot in this light, and you are illuminated for all the wretched creatures in this forest to see. To hear. To smell. To touch.

Hear how silent this forest is. Save for the light footsteps of a bird nearby, or the soft rustling of a rabbit in a cluster of bushes, there is nothing. This is a place where you can hear your own heart beat; where every beat drives you a little more scared. A little more paranoid. A little more... insane.

How could a forest like this not have secrets to hide?

You hear it all the time. Local clans and businesses warning travelers to never step foot into the Forest of Malice. Their warnings are sincere and desperate.

And yet, there is always some dragon that never listens. Perhaps they feel that they are above this dangerous forest, that they are powerful, wise, immune to all of its tricks. Perhaps they feel that the locals blow these dangers way out of proportion; a local legend, and nothing more.

Or perhaps they simply had no other choice.

But in any case... there will always be a dragon that ventures into those woods... never to return.

This is a warning. This is the story of a young pearlcatcher who had been traveling with her son.

The pearlcatcher and her young son were traveling back to their clan after visiting the Trading Post, and was about to walk through the Forest of Malice.

A local had seen them at the forest's edge and immediately called out to them, warning them to turn around and find another path.

The mother wasn't about to take any chances; not with her child with her. But to her shock and horror, her son had gone missing. The only thing left behind was a small footprint pointed in the direction of the forest.

The pearlcatcher knew that her son was fearless and curious to a fault. She didn't even need to guess where her son went.

With a somber expression and a melancholic apology to the local, the pearlcatcher stepped into the woods and traveled onward to find her son.

The local had a look of dismay and could only shake their head. Two more victims of the Forest of Malice. If anything, it was a good thing they weren't imperials, for that forest would become their tomb forever.

The mother traveled through the forest for one day and one night, her search unsuccessful. She was hungry and cold. She was desperate to find her son. And with every minute that past, she swore the beating of her heart grew louder and louder. A macabre crescendo of her impending doom.

Despite being in the thickest part of the forest, the pearlcatcher knew she wasn't seeing things. There truly was a patch of moonlight up ahead. It wasn't anything extraordinary, but to the pearlcatcher, this moonlight truly did feel like a blessing from the Heavens.

Cautiously, she began to creep forward. The pounding of her heart was only growing louder, and the soft breeze carried with it the sound of snickering.

Something else was here.

Her limbs were trembling like a newborn hatchling, and yet the mother persisted. There was an odd shape in the middle of the patch of light, and her instincts forced her to go closer.

The pearlcatcher collapsed in a daze. There was a pearl in front of her, its iridescent highlighted by the moonlight that brought her no comfort. Its owner was not here. Well... it technically was.

A skeleton was curled around the pearl. Slivers of muscle and tendons were all that was left. The blood has long since dried. Not that there had been much to begin with. This skeleton was small.

The size of a hatchling, in fact.

The pearlcatcher's eyes focused on this shallow grave. Unblinking. Still. Refusing to look away. The crescendo of her heart beat peaked before coming to a quiet end.

Two small claws came into her field on vision: one rested on the pearl, while the other rested on the skull of the pearlcatcher hatchling. Their dark green color seemed to melt onto the surfaces they were touching, tainting the pearl and the skull with a sorrowful color of murky water.

The sound of snickering came back. Though it was crystal clear now, as the source was right in front of her.

Using the last bit of strength the mother had left, she lifted her head in an agonizingly slow manner to gaze up at the creature in front of her.

A pelt of warm brown, with dark brown spots and flashes of dark green. Wings of thicket green with light green stripes that seemed to shine from the moon's light. Forest green claws that resembled that hateful, murky water.

Pearl white fangs revealed from a twisted and wicked grin. Turquoise eyes illuminated with a sick and disgusting glee.

"My, my, my... a mother's love truly knows no bounds."

A crunch. And the world grows dark, quiet, still.

Those monstrous eyes slowly look up, up, up, up- at you.
