Fury / Danger / Loyalty

Charr was raised to fight. She never knew her real family, only to fight in the games the beastclans put on. She learned to strike, to bite, to claw, to scream. They cheered her on when she was angry - anger meant more damage, meant more bets, meant more money. They poked her with sticks and prods until she bit them, and soon she could snap them with her jaws. They pitted her against stronger and stronger enemies, and she was the victor every time. Her only instinct was to survive, to live. They put restraints on her wings so she couldn't fly away, and she snapped their ropes to escape, so then they put her in chains. Her fury was limitless. She bit not only the hand that fed her, but every other hand that came close. She strained against the chains and cut at her own wings, with no success.

Scars were her only prizes for winning fight after fight. Charr was pushed to her limit again and again, then put against creatures much bigger than her. She knew only one thing, and repeated to herself day after day after day after day.

I MUST LIVE.

Anger. She was always angry. Livid. Anyone that came close was seen as a threat, a challenger, and even in chains, she could defeat them. After all, hadn't she been put in chains on battlefield before, to make it harder for her to win?

Her years of pain and fighting transformed her instincts, twisted her thoughts around. ANGER KEEPS ME ALIVE. When she was younger and felt things like sadness or hopelessness, she was weak. She could trust nothing but herself, her anger.

Every little thing they did, they thought they were pushing her to her breaking point, but Charr never broke. She endured it all, and finally, one day -

She broke her chains.

A huge crowd had gathered. The noise was unbearable. They brought out a hydra, it took ten different creatures to subdue it, plus having it chained up so tightly that it could barely move.

She saw a reflection of herself.

The hydra's chains were released. It struck at Charr.

Charr strained against the metal one last time. It bit into her wings viciously, reopening welts and scars that had been given by the constant chafing. She let out a roar, and they broke, shattered.

It was such a quiet sound, small pieces of metal clinking against the ground. It should have been unhearable from the deafening sound of the gathered crowd. But Charr had never heard something so loud before.

It was like they had unleashed a demon. She killed the hydra and her oppressors in a frenzy, a fit of years of pent-up hurting and abuse, finally she had her retribution.

She flew off, and for days she just flew. Any direction. Catching food in the air, but eventually exhaustion took its toll and she collapsed, crashing into a forest.

When she awoke again, there was another dragon beside her. Immediately, everything she had ever learned came back and she lunged at her opponent. But he was larger than her, and broke out of her lethal jaw-grip. "I'm not going to hurt you."

Impossibe. He's lying. Kill him. She tried again and again to fight this giant blue dragon, but each time, he pushed her off. And never with his claws, never with flashing teeth or claws.

It started to rain, and the weather chilled her to the core. With slow movements, the guardian moved closer. Charr tried to ward him off by snapping her teeth, but he didn't seem to care. Propping one wing overtop of her, the guardian lay down and shut his eyes. The rain fell harmlessly off his wing and kept it off of Charr.

Suspicion. The emotion surprised herself. Not anger? What was this dragon trying to do to her? Make her weak so it would be easier to defeat her? Don't trust him.

His heavy breathing was lulling. Don't fall for it. It's a trap! All of her instincts screamed at her, but Charr's body was unable to continue, and she fell alseep under his wing.

྿

He said his name was Somnus, that he found her lying in a crater in the woods and that she was badly wounded, that he knew a place where they could take care of her, heal her.

Too good to be true.

So he shrugged, and started walking off. Something happened that Charr didn't understand. That she hadn't felt ever before.

"WAIT!"

Somnus looked back at her, tipped his massive head, and paused for Charr to catch up.

The bad feeling went away.

"It's nice having company on a walk," Somnus remarked after they had been ambling through the woods for a while.

Company. "What's the opposite of company?" asked Charr.

"Loneliness, I'd suppose," responded Somnus.

྿

They reached a castle. Charr didn't care much, she bristled with suspicion at anything she didn't like, which was everything in the kingdom, and anything that dared move in her presence besides the slow, heavy plod of Somnus was immediately chased after and roared at.

But when Somnus brought her to the medic's den and another, strange dragon tried to touch her, she snapped. I KNEW IT I KNEW IT I KNEW IT, roared her instincts, her years of conditioning. She bashed through the ceiling, flames pouring from her mouth, and let out an enraged scream.
She fully expected to be chased after or forcefully restrained, but Somnus and the healer just stared up at her in surprise and shock. Nobody made pursuit. She hovered in the air. Her wings hurt so much.

The dragon in the neighboring building came out with water to put out the fire that she had started, and there were a few concerned words, a few glances up at Charr.

She slowly came back down, stumbled when she hit the cobblestones. Her body was so tired, so bruised and abused.

"Let me help you," pleaded the healer.

"DON'T TOUCH ME," ordered Charr loudly, eyes narrowed.

"I'll try not to."

Charr lay on the medic's table as she dripped salves and healing ointments onto her scars and scabs. The Banescale took comfort in seeing Somnus, cool and collected as ever, in the corner. When she caught his eye, he would give her an approving nod, so when the healer placed her claws on Charr's side to wrap bandages around, she didn't even notice until the healer proclaimed, "There. See, I didn't hurt you. May I do your wings now?"

྿

After Charr was introduced to the Sovereigns, Unknown gave Somnus the task of helping her through her traumas. Indeed, the guardian was perfect for the job. He seemed to radiate calm and sleepiness, and Charr could even admit to herself that she... trusted him. Just a little.

These dragons, that had taken her in and that forgive her even when she snaps and burns down a roof or smashes a wall... She had never experienced anything like this before. They didn't try to understand her, they didn't get upset when something small sent her over the edge, they just did their best. Most dragons avoided her, and she avoided them, but the Sovereigns, Borderline, and Somnus were the ones that made an effort to see her. She gave her loyalty to them, swore that she would use her incredible strength and power to protect these specific dragons. When Meridian hatched, she practically became the prince's bodyguard, and Somnus had to pry her away.

Charr is still angry. It's how she lives. She always has a fire burning in her, a righteous fury deep inside. She sticks to her philosophy - Rage keeps you going when nothing else does. Others may disagree, but it kept her going, and she is forever grateful that she survived as long as she did to meet Somnus and the rest of Synto.
