___Little is known about the history of Echidna, only mere whispers, dreaded snippets of information passed down the generations of Dragons and Beastclans alike. Many assume she was the result of an unimaginable union between powerful deities while some suggest her progenitors originated from the Sea of a Thousand Currents, but only the brave dare say such a defiled creature surely could not be spawned by any known being. What is known is that her home is rooted deep within the caves and caverns of the Plaguelands, but how she came to live there, may never be revealed.
___For all of her time she had only known her own company — left to fester in isolation, her only source of entertainment stemmed from her food. Echidna's appetite exceeded her and was the sole reason her existence was uncovered. The inhabitants of the Plaguelands became suspicious due to the copious amount of bones piled in peculiar places that were known to have no signs of life around for miles; scouts were sent but never returned. Whether due to incompetence or fear investigations stuttered, evidence was ignored and the scouts were assumed to be deserters or deceased. Rumour of her residence spread like The Shade, and she was left to sedate her hunger and placate her boredom on her lonesome again, much to her distaste.

___The longer Echidna stayed in her underground network, desperately awaiting unsuspecting prey, her boredom grew and slowly manifested into something else entirely. Eventually, the mere consumption of a meal was not satisfying enough. The brief flicker of shock in their eyes before they met their demise did not fulfil her. That was when she learned of the one thing that truly brought her joy and caused her scales to almost crack under the pressure of her sinister smile. She began to tease and torment her prey, emitted a sickly sweet smell of decay as a lure, and allowed them to enter deep into her abode. Only she knows the truth of the atrocious acts she commits.
___There were times she felt a compulsive desire to explore what lay beyond her lair, but those fleeting thoughts were not worth dwelling on. She had been hunted down in any home she had previously found herself in and she knew fine well a being such as her would not be accepted, never mind worshipped in ways she would deem worthy. It was truly a feat that she had survived for so long, even with the Deities themselves seeking to have her head whenever they were reminded of her continuous existence; only the Filthy One dares to tolerate her presence, at least when it is convenient. As far as she is concerned she is alone in this world no matter which direction she travels in, any creature like her is cornered and contained. She won't let that happen to her though. She'd rather die than end up in one of The Cold One's cages.

___Many meals had come and gone; an innumerable amount of souls were sacrificed to stave her hunger yet she somehow never felt full. An emptiness gnawed at her insides so ferociously that she began to believe she would waste away no matter what she consumed to fill the ever-growing void created in its wake. She ached so deeply for more than the mere passing of time measured by her insatiable appetite, constantly scouring the same treacherous tunnels for ill-prepared prey that have unwittingly wandered within. As she became increasingly distraught with her solemn existence, she entertained reckless thoughts of venturing from her underground lair, fantasising about basking in the light of the Bright One, despite knowing such an act could end her in an instant. Ultimately she decided the risk was worth the reward.
___She slithered her way through her web of tunnels until she reached the passage bordering the inland sea. Barely able to recall when she had first discovered her refuge, she apprehensively stepped out from the shadows for the first time since. A tepid breeze tussled her untamed mane and the sensation on her scales caused a mild shiver to shoot up her spine — or so she assumed until it didn't subside. She gazed around until she caught sight of a serpentine creature soaring above. She felt their eyes meet and as her heart began to race, the figure flew past as if oblivious of her and the tempo of her heartbeat switched from infatuated to furious. Just as she considered giving in to the temptations of her rage the figure landed a short distance away and stalked up to her confidently. Seizing the opportunity of petty revenge, she turned tail and lead him into her lair, contemplating whether or not she would let him leave.

___She navigated through her network with the stranger trailing close behind, the thrill of being chased evaporated her prior foul mood and left her feeling rather peckish. As she reached her den, the smell of decomposition permeated the air and encouraged her appetite. She snatched a wriggling creature from the corpse it was feasting upon and wolfed down half of it before feeling slightly embarrassed. She offered what remained of the meal to her companion and as their eyes met she was overwhelmed by his intense emotions. Suddenly he consumed the offering from between her talons just as she felt tendrils of his magic reach out to caress her. Unable to resist his temptations, she gave in, and they coiled around each other as their magic pulsed rhythmically until four translucent eggs sat haphazardly in a small crater, the silhouette of each hatchling visibly writhing within.
___It wasn't long until their clutch broke free from their casings and their four children scurried around her den, exploring the world in their own peculiar ways. Echidna took every opportunity to shower their hatchlings with affection; even the ones who didn't appreciate the attention were unable to escape her smothering love. Her mate ranted and raved about their future together — her heart swelled as he proclaimed that they and their offspring would rise above their oppressors, cursing out the Deities in between his declarations of love for her. As he hurriedly left her home to conspire his plan, she doted on her children and excitedly dreamt of the many more to come.
No more shall they merely survive.
