Biography

“Always remember that those with very important paths to fulfill will always be forced by life into the fear of the very things that their true paths consist of, in order to prevent the destiny from ever happening.

Or perhaps, in order to strengthen the courage of the heart, because courage is to look into a direction, make a choice and to actually do that which you are afraid of, and what is destiny if it is not fulfilled by a heart full of courage and brawn?”

― C. JoyBell C.

“Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.”

NEPHTHYS
Nephthys ("nef-these"): Egyptian Goddess "worshiped as the goddess of mourning, rivers, the night, service, childbirth, mothers, the dead, protection, the home, the hearth, coffins, burial, and air."

The skies were unusually calm over the Shifting Expase the day this little guardian washed ashore. Her seemingly lifeless form was found draped over the sands by one of the very unamused leaders of the Lost Clan. Ridley, a dark imperial two times the other dragon’s size, gazed down at the young dragon with surprising warmth in his violet hues. She was certainly far from home, having somehow made her way to the ocean of ice fields on the other side of the scrub. Somehow she had adventured far beyond the tide pools of her birth, but here she was none the less, a fish out of water and barely breathing. The acquisitions specialist was tasked with finding lost things, the bigger the better. Scrap metal, broken spires, rusted wires. His clan mates did not expect him of all dragons to bring a lost little dragon home, but as he descended from the skies and dove deep to the bottom of the abandoned quarry where the clan called home, it was clear there was something special about this dragon.

“Bloom,” Ridley rasped, “Ainsley. See what you can do about healing her. I’ll go talk to Drath.” Without hesitation, his clanmates launched into action, the motherly tundra named Bloom assisting as her wildclaw assistant made sure the young guardian’s unconscious form made it down safely from the larger dragon’s back.

“We have a new found one. A guardian. Found her barely breathing at the edge of the ice fields....” Ridley announced as he entered the alchemist’s cave. His mate, and her nocturne friend, made up the other three leaders of this little lightning clan.

“Why the hesitation, Ridley? This isn’t the first time we’ve welcomed in a wayward soul, even if this is the first you’ve found on your own. If anything we are proud,” Dratheas mused, though his focus was clearly more on his cauldron. “Something wrong?”

“Not wrong... exactly. There is something different about this one though,” the other imperial admitted.

“Ya hardly like anyone, Riddler mate, yer probably just needing some time to get to know her.” One of the nocturnes chimed in.

“No.. no it’s nothing like that... it’s.... Well you should probably come see for yourself.” Cautiously, he led the little nocturnes outside where, in the middle of the quarry floor, the young guardian had finally opened her eyes... which swirled with the currents of their own seas.

“By Stormcatcher’s lightning!” Siri gasped.

“I don’t think Stormcatcher had anything to do with this one.”

A terrified screeching had shaken the quarry dragons awake every night since the water dragon’s arrival. “I see you. What do you want?” She trembled, pleading in the night to the demons that haunted her. “It’s me, hatchling. Be calm.” Bloom murmured, having been sent in to calm the young guardian’s fears.

“No. No no it’s not just you. I can see them, hear them, can’t you?”

The kind tundra sighed, “what you see I cannot. Yet what I can see... you don’t. Tell me, can you still not see me?”

The guardian shook her head, blinking the oceans that made up her eyes. “I know you are a dragon, like me, so you must look it. You would have eyes and ears, horns and great mashing teeth and claws for fighting. I do not know if you have fur or scales or feathers, but I know you smell of roses and honeysuckle and sage and I know you are small. To me you are a small green blur.”

The tundra nodded, though the young guardian could not see it. She was blind, or almost so, which made the idea of her seeing things that were not there all the more troubling. “And the others here? What about them?”

“Phantoms. Dark, fearsome creatures with drooping flesh and exposed bone.”

“Are you afraid?”

“Very.”

“Then let’s make you scarier. Let’s learn how to be brave.”

tumblr_inline_o21bmjI1M91r3lvtf_400.png

Her training started in the fields with Bloom and her mate, then graduated to the mire under the tutelage of Taika, the kinder of the two nocturnes that helped lead the little clan. There, she learned the importance of endurance and teamwork, working alongside other interns who rotated out one by one to join Stormcatcher- but not her. Nephthys, or ‘Neph’ as her adopted clan mates liked to call her, always wanted more. Learning to face the blurry beasts of the mire was nothing compared to the monsters she heard whispering to her in her sleep, who haunted her as she moved about the scrub. She needed more training, and that’s when she was finally introduced to Siri and the abandoned ruins that few dragons dared to enter.. for fear they would never return.

“First lesson 'bout bein' brave- brave ain't not having fear. It’s bein' 'fraid of doing somethin' and doin' it anyway. Second lesson 'bout bein' brave- the gods tell us our choices are flight or fight. So, if ya don’t want to be limited to flight, ya oughta learn how ta fight.” The little nocturne seemed very brave. She was a blurry mess of shadows cut by neon blues unlike any Neph was familiar with. She made it sound easy, like their flight towards the ruins was nothing when the guardian was feeling herself tremble from snout to tail and it took everything she had to keep following the blur of her new mentor. The sounds were getting louder already, the ghostly whispers and taunts enough to drive any dragon mad, let alone one who could see the dead more clearly than the living. “Ready, hatch? Once we’re in it, there’s no goin' back.”

“I don’t think I’ll ever be more ready... though that amount is not much....”

Siri laughed, “That’s the spirit Nephie, me girl. Let’s go!”

Despite her fear, Nephthys did her best to fight hard and fight bravely. She wanted to learn how to stand up to her demons, to respect them but learn to demand respect in return. More than that, she no longer wanted to be called a hatchling or hatch. If she could fight then she could fight both for herself and others, and that made her wiser than the other young dragon’s who fought for pride or ego.

It was there on that first day among the ruins that she learned her most important lesson. They were up against a trio of hounds with glowing skulls and putrid fumes. Siri was able to take out two with ease and while she struggled with a third, Nephthys found herself face to face with a boney dog herself. He whimpered and licked a crack in his paw and when the guardian approached with calm, he did not attack, letting her get close enough to the wound to see it clearly.

Fear. Fear was a weapon. It started wars between the dragons and the beasts of the wild. It pitted gods against each other. It made gentle spirits attack when perhaps they feared the mighty dragons who raided their graves even more than the dragons feared them.

“Become scarier, that's what Bloom said to do. You're not vicious... you're afraid... like me....” Neph murmured to the hound as the last of its pack crumbled to ash. “I would like to keep this one. He appears harmless, and will help us learn that there are spirits to fear and spirits who are afraid,” she told Siri.

“I dunno 'bout that....” The nocturne dropped down in front of the skeletal canine, who growled at her. “Ye'll have to keep 'im away from the hatches. They’ve been through enough trauma. An’ don’t start going soft on me now.”

“Of course not,” Neph promised. She would still fight against the demons, but maybe the reason she could see them when other dragon’s were blinded was because only she could tell the difference between the feared and the fearful.

Then came the wailing. She had settled into her role as ruins raider and ghostly caretaker and for the most part was content being found by the lost lightning clan, but the gods, it seemed, had other plans. “Do you hear that?” The mature guardian asked with surprising strength. Her wraith hound companion perked up, shaking out the bones of his spine as he floated to his feet and snorted in the direction of the sound.

“Me, too, spooks. Been hearing it for days. What could it be?”

The hound circled, the rattling of his bones now a familiar, excited sound. “You want to find out? What if it’s far?” The ghostly hound whined and the brave guardian laughed. “Alright, let us bid our farewells.”

It was bittersweet; she had learned so much from these hard-working dragons of the scrub. Bloom was her mother, Siri and Taika her mentors, her sisters, and yet the cries beckoned her onward. There were new adventures to be had, new friends to meet, and new demons to vanquish.

So she set out to soar above the Shifting Expanse, her Spooky companion following behind, with only an occasional rattle to break the relenting cries that became louder and louder as the land below grew lush and green. The pair found a soft spot to land, a newly formed den that smelled of inexperience and ambition and strangely enough... paint fumes?

“Who goes there?” A voice beckoned from a speck of red that Neph could only assume was a dragon.

“I am Nephthys. Friends call me Neph. I have followed the sound of the spirits of this land. They are crying out and I must listen. May I settle here? I can bring protection from the howling, from the beasts, or anything else you might fear.”

“I’m not afraid!” The speck insisted. “And that howling? It’s called wind.”

“Mmm. Yea I hear that, too, the wind. There is also howling, desperate cries of the undead, and the sound of fear on your little voice despite your words. But you will learn. I can teach you. I can help you be brave.”

“I- why would you do that?”

“I was scared once, too, and little, though not as little as you. Other dragon’s found me. They took me in and taught me things I might not have learned on my own. Now it is your turn.”

There was a hesitation before the speck led her deeper into the green of his homelands.

“I’m Nat, by the way.” The fae introduced.

“Nice to meet you, Nat,” Neph mused, chuckling lightly at the fae's surprised yelp as her familiar came out from hiding beneath her. “This is Spooks. I hope your clanmates like ghost stories. We may have one or two for you, isn't that right bud?” Spooks gave a cheerful, ghostly bark and they followed the fae onward, excited for what adventures lie ahead.
