Megachile pluto aka Wallace's Giant Bee

The largest living bee species, about the length of an adult thumb, is also one of the most secretive. The bees build communal nests inside of active termite nests. Females uses their huge mandibles to collect tree resin for the construction. The much smaller males lack the distinctive jaws. Their range is limited to only three islands in Indonesia and their habitat is threatened by palm oil plantations. Only three have been sighted since the 1980s, two of which were sold as specimens on ebay. There is only one video recording of the species.
