Those who have never visited the Southern Icefields often make the mistake of believing the greatest danger lies in the deep snow. It may be true that the towering snowdrifts of the region pose some threat to inexperienced travelers, but to name them the most perilous feature is foolhardy, even presumptuous.

After all, any native to the Icefields can tell you that you must watch for the things that move beneath the ice.

If it is frozen solid, then its time has come and gone. Something that has the strength to survive despite freezing cold and lack of resources, however, is something worthy being wary of. It is something worth fearing.

Not that Sarite knows that they fear her. Not yet. She simply drifts from floe to floe in her place beneath the ice, cutting through the running water below like a blade. She cannot know she is the shadow in the deep, the beast in the ice. She is simply a huntress, biding her time and patrolling her home, at one with the chilly waters.

She is called, though. Since the day she opened her eyes and peered into the world, ice melting from her body as the water finally reached her, she knew that she possessed another purpose. What that purpose may be, though, she cannot put into words. There are vague impulses that accompany the thought, like a craving for the touch of flame and the hunger for the crunch of bone, but they pass. They always pass.

Until they don't.
