Poinsettias are native to Central America, particularly Mexico and Guatemala. Poinsettias get their American name from Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico and an avid botanist, who brought them to the United States from Mexico in the early 1800s. They became traditional holiday decorations a century later when Paul Ecke developed the first indoor potted poinsettias. He sent free poinsettia plants to TV studios across the country, including “The Tonight Show” and Bob Hope’s holiday specials. This created the trend and now poinsettias are among the most popular plants sold in the U.S. The reason we think of Poinsettias as a Christmas flower comes from an old Mexican Folktale. Pepita, a poor Mexican girl, was sad that she did not have a gift to give the baby Jesus at the Christmas Eve Mass. Her cousin tried to cheer her up by saying that Jesus would accept even the smallest present from someone who loved him. With no money to buy a gift, she picked a handful of weeds from the side of the road. When she got to church she left the small bouquet of weeds at the bottom of the nativity scene. Suddenly the weeds transformed into beautiful red flowers. From then on in Mexican churches poinsettias were considered Christmas flowers.

Christmas was not always celebrated on December 25. For Christianity’s first 3 centuries, Christ’s birth was not celebrated at all. Christians instead celebrated “Epiphany” on January 6 (a/k/a 3 Kings Day or Little Christmas). It was not until 336 CE that the first known mention of December 25 as a holy day honoring Christ’s birth appears in an early Roman calendar. In 323 CE, Emperor Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. As the Christian church tried to convert the populace they originally tried to stop the populace celebrating the existing “pagan” rituals, but when traditions were too difficult to overcome the Church absorbed them, creating the ecclesiastical calendar around them. They likely picked December 25 as Christ’s birth date to coincide with existing Roman Festival of “Saturnalia” (which took place between December 17th and 23rd and honored the Roman god Saturn) and “Dies Natalis Solis Invicti” (which means 'Birthday of the Unconquered Sun' and was held on December 25th when the Romans thought the Winter Solstice took place and was the 'birthday' of the Persian Sun god Mithra).
