Outside of the Amsterwick, the apple trees bear fruit almost year round, save for a brief period in late spring when they flower instead, showering the earth with delicate white petals. The shade of the gardens is as tempting as its fruits, too, augmented by towering cedars and spreading birch trees. A weary traveler may rest among the many groves and catch their breath long before ever entering Amsterwick proper.
But they will not be alone, and they will know it.
The shadows will bend strangely, as if not wholly themselves. There will be a whistling on the breeze, the soft calls of creatures heard in the brush. The sounds of the evening can be heard at dawn, and the sounds of day heard deep into the night. Something about the Amsterwick wood is wholly apart from the way the world should be, and it is rare to find a traveler who is not unsettled.
That means it is equally rare to find Aliye bored.
Some of Amsterwick's leaders find her antics rather childish, but they cannot deny that she is an incredibly effective gatekeeper. With her skills in mimicry and her small size, she flits between the apple trees with the barest of sounds, observing the city's visitors well in advance of their arrival. The only hints of her presence are the sounds of the forest that she chooses to make, and the nagging sense that one is being watched closely by hidden eyes. Rarely does she choose to expose herself completely, preferring by far to see without being seen.
Thankfully, her job is not terribly difficult. Most travelers have naught but good intentions, and simply wish to find their way to the city. Sometimes, Aliye helps them on their way, leaving signs in the trails, trimming back trees to offer a glance of sky and white stone in the distance. Now and again, when she encounters a traveler she particularly likes, Aliye will actually reveal herself, fluttering down from the trees to pose a riddle. This usually only happens when her friends in Amsterwick have posed a riddle she has yet to solve, one that could benefit from outside insight, provided she doesn't scare her unwitting helper away with her sudden appearance, or scare their wits away by slithering out of a tree in the evening light.
But sometimes, she must fulfill her duties as a gatekeeper and defend Amsterwick from harm. A rise in traveling rogues has prompted her to engage more often, but no one can accuse her of failing to take her role seriously at such times. On the occasions that she senses harm leveled at her dear city, she draws on the height of her Plague heritage, raining down poison on those who would dare to cross her threshold with ill will in their hearts.
Remember this as you cross the woods in pursuit of Amsterwick's white stones. Remember that Aliye is never far. Remember that she sees all that goes on within her woods. It would not be wise to challenge her.
