★Grace Moncrieff
News reporter - Both sides of a coin
tumblr_inline_ocweb5AsIl1tqyuge_100.gif

Everyone knows Grace Moncrieff. Even better than Celine Starosva. After all, they see her multiple times a day almost every day. Even facing the most gruesome or terrifying situations she stays calm, collected but most importantly compassionate.
But is she as innocent as she appears to be?

“-This was the National News Broadcast, Grace Moncrieff, goodnight Ferside.”
As soon as the filming crew’s cameras turned off that business smile fell immediately off her face. Something was definitely going wrong here. As much as they were trying to keep unrest hidden from the public eye, it did not stop it.
Framing the small, but growing rebellion as a group of violent individuals seeking to throw the world into chaos much unlike the state the Final War brought upon us.

But swallowing so many words over the years of her career has made her doubt their intentions.
“The economy is flourishing,” as per last Monday’s 8PM broadcast. Yet, more and more people fell into poverty as the rich grew richer.

“We’re safer than ever,”
Thursday, 12.00. Next day, an SRH unit went haywire due to starburn and a whole district went up in flames.

“All the laws are here to ensure your safety and well-being. A robot in circulation never makes mistakes, so if someone’s guilty, they’re guilty,” the reminder when we cover another crime… But what if the laws the robot is built for are in the wrong?

Tomorrow is another long day, to cover what new might happen, but the night is hers and hers only. Dedicate it to sleep? No. She does what she did during the day. Just in another light.
The sun and its reflections dancing around in the city replaced by the cold glow of a screen as she tapped the same news again and again, under a name no one ever had.

The ‘attack’ on the 4th dust refinery was a malfunction

On 09 news broadcast it was stated that dust refinery 04-56B was rendered incapable of production for a long time in an incident caused by a group of "dangerous criminals" setting up one of the more volatile systems up for failure. Thankfully no person was seriously harmed as alarm had been struck before the explosion.

However, the theory of a group of individuals sabotaging the refinery hasn't been proven yet. Contrary to the report, current investigation results even point towards an internal malfunction, possibly caused by a combination of unfavourable factors and negligence.

She finished transferring the article to the web from her document. One click is all it takes to publish it. One click to stand up for the truth.
The hour had already crept to 2 in the night. A small pop-up indicated that the article was published successfully. Grace smiled wearily to herself as she shut down her computer. Essi had curled up next to her and it was time for her to rest as well.
Tomorrow will be another long day...

"And this concludes the news report of 21.00. May we all have a safe and wonderful night, residents of Ferside." And the cameras clicked off. The business smile fell from Grace's face as she dug in her mind, trying to come up with a route to return home quickly. What rotten luck that she had been appointed to such a distant location for the last take.

Essi, a small cat-like robot that was her companion rubbed against her leg, looking up excitedly. She never seemed bored by even the most repetitive routine. Despite being so small, and frankly, adorable, Essi was very well capable of defending herself and her owner, something Grace had already had the need for. Being well known had its downsides…
“Hey, Grace, do you need a ride?” One of the camera crew workers, Axel, called out to her, “I need to go to the centrum tonight. Figured you’d prefer not to walk the distance.”
“Yeah! Yeah. That’d be great, Axel, thank you. I wasn’t really looking forward to getting lost past sundown.”

She hopped in Axel’s car, Essi following her closely, curling up in her lap. The glow of the sun had died down already, and the streets were lit by the soft but cool glow of star-powered lamps. She closed her eyes for a second, the quiet hum of the motor and the dim light lulling her to sleep… Axel broke the silence:”You seem tired the last days.”
“Hah, I sure am. Been sleeping awfully recently…”Grace tried to push back the looming sense of dread. There’s no way Axel would know. “Maybe I should take a day or two off in the near future,” she laughed. Something drew her glance back to the window, an odd figure standing in the mostly empty street. A glimpse of bright pink was the only thing she could identify before the figure was lost to the blur.
“Maybe you should, yes. You’ve been so jittery one could think you’ve got stardust poisoning,” One could think Axel was being wholly serious, were it not for that slight laugh they had. Always had an odd sense of what’s funny, haven’t they? “Oh, shut up, it’s not that bad. Hey wait- That is Settlane street, right?” The car slowed down. “Yep. You need to get off here if I’m correct? I need to go straight ahead along the canal so this is the nearest stop.”

-

They finally found an empty spot to stop and bid each other a good evening. Grace knew which streets to take to get home the quickest, but she decided to take a small detour to stay in the bigger ones, just to be safe. According to Essi it was 22.30. Had that ride really taken so long on the way back? It sure felt shorter when going to the Indsrict.
Grace’s steps quietly echoed in these streets. Almost no one was out at this hour, they didn’t have a reason to be. Essi’s chrome paws clinked along her footsteps…
A shadow that was not her own followed the two. Grace turned around to look, anxious, but not sure if it was her tired mind playing tricks on her. Essi looked at her in confusion. Safe to say she was imagining things, the small robot would notice a threat quicker than she could.
She heard steps following her own...or was it the acoustics being weird? Grace took a sharp turn and stopped, pressed to the wall. She was sure someone was following them. Why was Essi not reacting? Slowly she tried creeping along the wall to keep moving but still stay hidden.

Something was wrong. Where’s Essi? Still where she stood first. Frozen. Another figure stood right in front of them. Completely white, and a heavy helm hiding their entire face...If they had one.
“Stop right there, Grace Moncrieff,” a cold voice commanded her. Not loud, but clear and heavy. She froze. Magenta markings. She was in trouble. She took a step back. Signed her companion to take action, do anything. But Essi did not move. Should she turn her back to them? For sure a special agent would have a weapon on them. Should she run anyway? One more step. She did not think as much any more. One more step, sideways, she saw a hand rise, she had to run faster just to satisfy her fear and instinct to survive. A simple click. Something small, not much bigger than a cat barrelled into her legs. Losing her balance she fell to the hard ground. Grace looked up only to see the familiar face of Essi and a shadow approaching her. Now looming over her. The masked figure approached her with machine-like precision. “Are you aware that your actions have consequences?,” They flicked their magenta “ears” indignantly. Grace’s legs hurt. She should run.
“You know they do. Endangering public safety, risking our precious peace in the way you have...” Her one last chance slipped away as a heavy boot pinned her to the ground. Foolish of her to think she ever had had a chance.
She drew a breath, which might as well be her last one. Sharp pain spread throughout her chest and her vision blurred.
Through the veil of her darkening vision she could just barely make out the figure drawing what appeared to be a weapon.
