Mason's father is a metalworker in Tanglevine. His mother was a Lightning expat working in Hewn City. Mason lived with his mother and learned to steal and more or less fend for himself from a young age. When he became an adult, his mother took another business opportunity and gave him the option of going with her or staying in Hewn City. He chose to stay in the city, which had given him more than she had.

Shortly after this, he met his mate, Gala, in Lantern Corridor. They have a strong relationship, though they have not always gotten to live together. They have one child, Chela, who by now also has a mate and child.

Mason wanted to have a nice place for his mate to return to after traveling. He did odd jobs for a couple of years, and after building up a positive reputation, he became employed by the pawn shop owner. When the owner left Hewn City, Mason took over the shop, and he has been managing it ever since. He tries to be fair while still keeping the lights on. This shop has been a fixture of Lantern Corridor for a very long time.

He has old bones and knows this place very well. He knew things were changing as soon as Anzo arrived on the scene. It wasn't long before Anzo's goons were walking around making not-so-subtle suggestions about what dragons might want to do in order to continue doing business in the area. What surprised Mason was not that Anzo was trying to take over, but that (founder)'s sons weren't standing up to him. Surely the wealthy family had the resources to defend what they had built from an upstart. But they seemed to be biding their time. In the meantime, (someone) resisted and got completely driven out of town as an example to the rest. That was when Mason knew that he denizens of Lantern Corridor were on their own. He didn't have what it took to openly fight. He would have to find another way.

It was a shame that this was going to involve his child and grandchild. He had not expected it to come to his doorstep so fast, and he had certainly not predicted that Anzo would make changes that caused him to lose so much revenue. Moving the pawn shop to the back of the corridor was one thing. The shop had enough of a reputation that many dragons would seek it out anyway, though incidental traffic would drop. But now he wanted Mason to sell books. Previously he wouldn't have taken books that dragons tried to pawn, since there were far too many and they didn't sell well. Now he was going to have to dedicate most of the extra space in his new location to bookshelves, making it more difficult to get around the store. Meanwhile, at the old location - which he may as well have built with his own hands - his grandson, green as his name, was selling kitschy souvenirs to fill Anzo's pockets.

It was cruel, but they all had to play along, for now.
