The healers didn’t have high hopes. For better or worse, whatever ailed the young hatchling, nobody could ascertain. The Nocturne had spent no more than four days with high fever and trembling uncontrollably. There were murmurs that, perhaps, this one was just not meant for the world and that she was, simply put, too weak. Sometimes, as cruel as it was, a hatchling would be too weak to survive their first month and would perish shortly after. In such cases, it was more merciful to gently let the hatchling pass before they degraded too much and suffered too greatly. They hadn’t even offered the little Nocturne a name in fear of her not making that first week. Talks were already held within the hatchery of what to do with her and how small the odds of her thriving had become. It was a most peculiar happening, though, the next day. Identical in almost every aspect right down to the element that had been imbued upon them; a male Nocturne born not metres apart from where the sickly hatchling had; his eyes blearily opening and a strong cry given as he took his first couple of breaths out of his egg. The healers hushed talks subsided in favour of checking the infant who had little intent on wasting time around the adults. Healthy in every way; this one they could salve. It was more an impulse than medically proven but one of the healers set the male next to his twin counterpart; Kato, they opted to call him. His survival was not in question but, just maybe, his will to live would spark something within the smaller female. Nobody expected it to work so upon the dawn of the next day when they returned to the nest they had set the pair in, naught but surprise marked their maws. Linnea; a name she grew into. One they confidently gave her as she coiled next to Kato with brighter eyes and keen awareness. No longer was she trembling nor searing to the touch. A fever still lingered but that would clean up in due course, one was willing to bet. Those of the clan couldn’t at the time and still cant to date say what illness took Linnea in her first few days of life but what they can say without doubt is that Kato saved her life. The more hallowed of dragons would say that the great Stormcatcher, himself, made them to be one and only when they became as such did they thrive. Soul mates. Because if not that then what else could it be? Written by Pipirii |
