“Blaze, you’re finally... what’s going on here?” Adara heard from a distance. Crystal lay next to her with fresh burn marks along her side.
“We had nowhere else to go, please just let us stay here for a while,” the hatchling heard her mother saying. Adara stumbled out of the small nest and called for her.
“We’ll talk about this more later,” Blaze said as she entered the den with a large dragon following her.
“Blaze, where is our brother and sister?” Adara wondered, looking up at her.
Blaze stared down at the ground before hesitantly answering, “I... I don’t know, I’m sorry Adara.”
—————————————————————————————————————————————
“I don’t need you, I don’t need anyone!” Adara shouted before running off. The young girl shot up into the sky and flew away from her family’s den as quickly as she could. Adara kept flying until she reached a small island on the coast of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. She landed next to a lone tree that was marked with a charred imprint from a small talon. ‘What’s your problem anyway?’ Adara faintly heard as she thought back to the argument. She burned a new print beside the smaller one before racing into a nearby cave. She was one of the few to ever visit this island and as a hatchling Adara was always too scared to explore the cave, today she planned on changing that. She quickly arrived at a couple of different paths, continuing through one that wasn’t flooded. Adara wondered how big these caves truly were as the tunnel she was in became extremely foggy. The young dragon thought about returning home, but decided to continue pressing on even though it felt as though she had been wondering for hours. ‘You’ll never make it out there on your own, Crystal!’ Adara heard herself say before she sped up, no longer caring how long she remained in there as she pressed on. She ran through the massive tunnels, refusing to slow down even as exhaustion set in. It wasn’t uncommon for her to argue with her sister, but this was the worst it had ever been. ‘Get away from me!’ Adara heard as she took off at full speed, soaring through the tight tunnels even as the walls became nearly impossible to see in the dense fog. The young dragon suddenly crashed into a wall at the end of the tunnel and fell to the ground as her vision faded. In her dreams, Adara saw herself from a distance as she slammed into another dragon. The noise around her was nothing but a dull roar as one of the figures flew off into nothingness.
“You never did need them, my girl,” a voice said to her, “Because you have us.” Adara suddenly saw a flash of light before waking up within the cavern. A harsh pain erupted from the dragons leg as she stood up, but she refused to be stopped by the injury.
Adara stopped for a moment as she heard something nearby and growled, “How long have you been here?” A dark grey guardian slowly came out from behind a massive bone and hesitantly called, “I just want to help, I’m not going to hurt you,” Adara took a step back, flinching at the pain. The older dragon stared at her for a moment before continuing, “It’s okay, just follow me. I’ve got a place you can stay for a while.”
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Adara woke up in her bare, icy cavern after another nightmare. She kept wondering what they were about, but was glad that they have gotten less common for her. She looked around the den, wondering how frustrated or restless she was when she made a newer set of slashes on the cave’s walls. Everyone knew how much she stood out in the cold, unforgiving land that was her newest home, but Adara didn’t mind.
“You’re finally awake! Do you realize what time it is?” Crystal said as she entered her den, “I was just getting ready to leave,” Adara looked back at her in confusion before Crystal continued, “I... I was hoping you could see me off, I don’t know how long I’ll be gone.”
Adara watched Crystal run off to her den and followed as they went to the cavern’s exit. The cold night air took Adara by surprise, but she glanced at Crystal and asked, “Are you sure you want to be doing this? Where are you going to go anyway?”
Crystal hesitated for a moment before firmly responding, “I’m positive, you don’t need to worry about me Adara,” the fiery dragon nodded as Crystal did her final preparations.
“Good luck out there Crystal, you’re gonna need it.”
—————————————————————————————————————————————
“Anyone else want some of this?” Adara shouted as she backed away from a massive imperial, who had plenty of scars and scorch marks following a short battle, “That’s what I thought,” the nocturne said with a smirk.
“Very well done, I could use someone like you,” a small mirror praised, bringing her aside, “My clan has recently been having issues thanks to a little nuisance. Take care of it and you’ll be paid handsomely for your work,” Adara agreed to help without a second thought and the mirror lead her to some old ruins. The nocturne was surprised such a thing was even in the Ashfall Waste, but quickly got to work. It didn’t take long to find the dragon she had to look for. All Adara had to do was get the girl outside, but nobody told her much about the coatl that was now standing across from her.
—————————————————————————————————————————————
“You’re on the wrong side of this war,” the coatl roared as she flew out of a small opening. The battle had left both of the dragons scarred, but the nocturne had emerged victorious.
“About your reward,” the silver mirror said as Adara left the ruins, “I was thinking you could stay at my clan for a while, I can supply everything you need and more while you’re there.”
Adara hesitantly agreed, unsure if he was worth her trust as they flew towards the massive clan. She quickly settled into her new den, not minding how plain it seemed. “I’ve got another job for you when you’re ready for it,” The mirror called, surprising Adara for a moment.
She hadn’t expected it to be so far away, however at dawn he had taken the nocturne to the edge of the Shifting Expanse. “I trust you can handle this from here,” the mirror quickly said before flying off. Adara stared at the small den in the distance, wondering if this really was the right place as she approached. A bolt of lightning struck right beside her, leaving the girl stunned for a moment. Peircing blue eyes glared at her from where the bolt had struck, and she was left staring at a large skydancer. Without warning, he sent a bolt directly towards Adara. She staggered from the shock, nearly collapsing from its power. The young dragon recklessly charged at the skydancer. He easily knocked her over and slashed at Adara. “I’ll spare your life this time,” he said firmly, allowing Adara a chance to get up. She noticed a small dragon who had been watching from the den before meeting the skydancer’s gaze as he continued, “But only if you leave this place before I change my mind.”
