Creak Crack-crack SMASH
A small dragonet sat in the middle of a giant shattered crystal. It blinked and looked around curiously. His wings reflected the swirling blue constellations above, struck through by a slash of gold.
Lapis would be his name.
A FEW YEARS LATER...
Lapis sighed as he stared at his reflection in a small pool at the temple. The moment he touched this water, he would leave earth forever. He didn’t want to go to the ceremony! Sure, it was the highest honor, only the most magical, powerful, and mysterious dragons could have a fate like this! But he just wanted a normal life like the other dragons, to romp and play, do chores, laugh and enjoy life. Now, he was stuck with his destiny as an “exalted dragon” to serve the mighty dragon gods. He spread his wings, observing the deep blue color on them which he was named for. The patterns seemed to whisper in the light, casting a glimmer over the pool of water. “Well, I guess destiny is destiny,” he said to the shadow. “Well, I happen to believe you make your own destiny!” it yelped back. “Ahh!” Lapis gave a matching shout in surprise. “Who are you?” he asked suspiciously. Spies! He should report this!
The shadow replied snootily, “Never mind who I am, just an old water spirit. But you, need to learn to control your own life! I can see you don’t want to be exalted. Run away or accept it! And there ain’t gonna be no more mumbo jumbo from me, that’s all you gotta know and I’m leaving.” The wisp disappeared so quickly Lapis wondered if he had dreamed it all. But dream or not, it has planted a thought in his mind. Would he run away? He certainly could, all alone in the temple, but his family would be disappointed in him. But who came first, himself or his family? He pondered this thought for a while chasing it around his mind with all the possibilities of life ahead.
He could be free, gliding in the wind every day and waking up to the sound of bird calls and fresh fruit. But he could also choose a future, where he served the gods loyally, standing guard, protecting the world he lived in.
Making up his mind, he took a deep breath and strode up to the pool of sacred water that would take him away forever.
Closing his eyes, he leaped and soared out of the temple into the fresh air, taking the first step of his new life.
