Raulf

Raulf was the third hatchling of Inari and Lucian. He fell behind the other two in many areas and lost the desire to catch up. He knew his mother loved him and that was all he needed. He was closest to his mother and actually couldn't stand the presence of his father, who expected things of him.

Raulf was famously easy to get along with. He refused to be pushy or demanding. He was the favourite among palace staff and they secretly rooted for his victory.

However, Raulf had no desire to actually become king. He loved to just spend his days having tea with his mother, letting the rest of the world go by. But unfortunately, if he didn't become king, he would have to leave home. He resolved that there was no chance of him winning and he would just spend his time cheering on his older siblings.

Despite this resolve, Raulf was afraid. He was afraid of what would happen, if he lost and even more afraid of what would happen if he won. He was afraid of letting his father down, of leaving his mother, and crossing his siblings. He was afraid of trying and even more afraid of failure.

Raulf accepted his loss, forced to do so with 'grace', though how it was graceful to lose in battle he would never understand. He accepted the following exile with a broken heart, giving his mother one last longing glance, hoping to the last minute something would prevent him from going. But there was no fairy tale ending, no last minute rescue or rewritten law. He had to leave.

He traversed the Tangled Wood in a trance. He crossed the Scarred Wasteland with a growing sense of horror, revolted by the game of survival he saw everywhere. It reminded him grotesquely of home. The Starfall Isles was a dream in comparison, with dragons looking to the stars and doing magic beyond his understanding. How different it was, he still felt like a stranger, and his continued travel brought him to the edge of the Isles, where the Crystalspine Reaches almost met the Frigid Floes of the Southern Icefield. While he chased across the Frigid Floes, battling wind and water and the ever changing landscape beneath his feet, he realised he was fleeing from his homeland. He was trying to get as far away as possible, and he didn't know what would happen, when he couldn't run any longer.
