Joining the Band of Renegades (Part 6)
Content Warning: Brief description of a panic attack, situation leading to a panic attack.
After your encounter with the grumpy Imperial Hyperion, you began to feel a strange sense of ease around the clan. It was unexpected, you didn’t expect when you came with Diadem to feel a connection to the band of renegades and misfits, but as you went around the ranks to try and find your place in this well-oiled machine you found a piece inside that said maybe you truly do belong here.
“Sorry about him, he’s not usually this… irritable. It’s been a bit rough lately, what with extractions gone wrong and whatnot.” You flinched, you’d gotten so caught up in your thoughts you’d forgotten about Cirrus. “That’s alright, he’s been busy, it’s understandable.” “Ah, at least you get it. Not many would.” You nod slowly in sympathy. “Having the patience and the strength to see your family hurt and to heal them over and over again isn’t easy. I really admire that about him.” Cirrus’ mouth twists into a grin. “I suppose that is an admirable quality. Well, we’ve reached the den housing our mages, though I have to warn you, the High Mage is a bit of a strange character.” Strange? After everything I’ve seen so far, I doubt anything could be stranger. “Oh believe me, I’m stranger than you think, young one.” You jump in surprise and spin around to see a Spiral slink out of the den. Zir’s large magenta eyes stared directly into yours, as if ze could stare directly into your soul. You gulped nervously. “No need to be so nervous, I can only see what you allow me to see,” ze chuckles, as if this reaction is normal. “Cirrus didn’t get around to introducing me, did she? Shame.” “No, she didn’t. She only-” “Told you I’m strange. Happens every time. I keep telling her not to scare the newbies, its how I never get anyone in my division.” ...what? “Oh apologies, I still haven’t introduced myself properly! Sometimes I get so sidetracked and forget what I’m supposed to be doing. And I’m doing it again, silly me! The name’s Tourmaline, and I’m the High Mage here.” What use could a clan like this have for a High Mage? “Excellent question!” How does he know what I’m thinking!? “The eyes. A dragon’s eyes reveal all. It’s said that the eyes are the gateway to the soul, and well frankly that’s true. If there are loose thoughts in your head, I can see them.” Ze moves closer, bringing zir’s eyes to gaze directly into yours. “And the thing I see in your mind is confusion, nervousness, but also deeper down I can see suffering, pain, and the feeling of giving up.” “So what does your division do exactly?” You wrench your head away from zir’s relentless stare. “Nice diversion. Sorry if I hit a sore spot. Well, to answer your question, we use the combination of Cirrus’ inventions and magic to find dragons like you, who are in pain, who are lost, who need a reason to go on. We sense their emotions and turmoil and determine if they need to be extracted immediately or if we can take more time to build a stronger bond with them.” “You use magic to track turmoil?” Discomfort bubbles within you, and you wonder how long they’d been tracking you before Diadem approached with their offer. “Precisely! You’re catching on quick. Its not specifically turmoil, but a whole host of emotions that Diadem has identified as signs that a dragon is lost in life. Sometimes the feeling is easy to pinpoint and other times it takes a little prying, but at the end of the day-” “Thank you for your time Tourmaline, but I’m afraid we have a few more stops to make, and we wouldn’t want to keep you from your work.” Cirrus interrupts, a serious look on her face. You internally thank her for the rescue. “Oh well certainly! I wouldn’t want to make you late for your next appointment!” Cirrus all but drags you away from the mage, steps hurried as your breath goes ragged and your vision blurs. Next Part--> |
