┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
The dawn chorus woke Ignatious from slumber, an enormous yawn escaping from between his razor sharp teeth as soon as his eyes opened. He unwrapped his long, insulating tail and crept out of his den, muscles stiff from sleep. As the sun began to peek its head above the horizon, the Gaoler lept up to the rocky ledge above his den, doing a full body stretch and several more yawns. The sun climbed slowly in the sky and its gentle rays on his fiery fur was like a warm embrace. Ignatious closed his eyes in contentment, allowing himself to enjoy the sensation for several minutes. But then, it was time to get to work.

As the desert valley below him began to warm with help from the sun’s rays, a chorus of wildlife sounds began to drift towards the Gaoler waiting above. It was the beginning of spring in the desert, and although at night the temperature was still a bit colder than Ignatious preferred, the days were warm without reaching the oppressive heat of summer. Spring was his favorite season here, and he intended to make the most of his day. As he worked his way down from the lofty rock outcrop to the valley floor, Ignatious scanned his surroundings for signs of prey. A jackrabbit with enormous ears darted swiftly out of his way, startling a nearby kangaroo rat, which hurriedly returned to its burrow. High up on a Saguaro cactus, a Cactus Wren called out to its mate, keeping a wary eye on the predator below.

During a less plentiful time of year, any of these creatures would have made for a very satisfying meal indeed, but the valley was ripe with life, and only during spring did Ignacious have the opportunity to hunt for his favorite type of prey. He moved quickly and efficiently through the landscape, his pace a steady jog: not too fast to wear him out, but enough to get his blood pumping. He would need some adrenaline running through his veins for the meal to come.

After an hour or two of patient searching, Ignatious finally spotted his quarry, sunning itself on an exposed red rock, its bright yellow and black scales warning any potential predators to stay away! But to Ignatious, the warning was only an invitation, a promise of a delicious meal. The venom contained inside a Gila monster was enough to kill a normal dragon, unless they could make it to a healer in time. Not only could Ignatious gulp down one of these potent creatures as if they were a harmless mouse, in springtime, he fed almost exclusively on them, some days devouring up to ten or twelve.

Somehow he had developed a natural resistance to them over the years, and they had quickly become his favorite delicacy. He also just loved watching other dragons’ reactions when he gulped one down right before their eyes. The clan healer, Izrea, was always rolling her eyes at him, swearing that one day his body would succumb to the venom. Ignatious only laughed at her seriousness.

Unfortunately, this particular Gila monster saw him coming, and darted into the safety of its burrow. Ignatious sighed, settling down on his haunches near the burrow’s entrance. Now it was simply a matter of time. And if the reward was a stomachful of the best food he could imagine, Ignatious would wait as long as it took. Eventually the Gila would emerge, the Goaler would pounce, and the circle of life would keep rolling on...
