Plague Flight Representative
Plague Runestone

┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
Serpenta had always been headstrong, even as a hatchling. Refusing to eat the rotting carcasses her mother brought her, the traditional food of all young Plague dragons, Serpenta would instead hunt small mammals and frogs in the fetid pond near her nest, glaring at her mother defiantly as she wolfed down her kills. One day her mother couldn’t take it anymore.

“Clearly you don’t need me to hunt for you anymore, my child,” she had sneered with open disgust, lifting Serpenta up roughly in her jaws and flinging her from the nest while the rest of her siblings watched with bewildered eyes. Serpenta hated them. All of them. But she hated her mother most for disowning her that day.

Despite her upbringing, or perhaps because of it, Serpenta did not hate the Plague flight and was proud of her glowing crimson eyes that matched her scales. Plague dragons weren’t the loathsome, disease-ridden monsters other flights made them out to be. Too many times over the years, Serpenta had witnessed a plague dragon being harassed, assaulted, mocked, or even killed for their heritage, and she was determined to change that.

As smart as she was willful, Serpenta knew the only way to effect real change was to speak directly to those that did not share her beliefs. She began to befriend visiting dragons from other flights, winning them over with her charisma and charm. Eventually they would invite her to visit their own clans, and once there, her message spread like contagion.

Yes, the Plaguebringer was responsible for bringing death and disease, but without death, there could be no life. By overcoming afflictions, dragons became stronger, gained immunity. Diseases that affected prey provided ideal targets for hunters and huntresses, especially when times were harsh and food was scarce. These were the messages Serpenta spread, advocating for her brethren in hopes of fostering understanding and collaboration between flights.

Her travels took her to the entirety of Sorneith, all apart from one corner of the world: The Viridian Labyrinth. The Nature flight, she suspected, would be hardest to convince. And, truth be told, she harbored certain resentments of her own towards the emerald-eyed servants of the Gladekeeper...

After being exiled from her birthclan, Serpenta had lived for many years on the fringes of the Tangled Wood, unable to offer anything to prospective clans that might take her in. Her willful nature and strong opinions often didn’t help matters, and it wasn’t long before she would get into some fateful argument or fight and would be forced to move on. Life alone without a clan for protection or support was merciless. She was always dancing dangerously between trespassing on clan territory or hunting in the dominion of the beastclans. Every day was a coin toss that left her either fighting for her life or scavenging barely enough sustenance to survive until tomorrow.

When she met a fellow lone traveler one day, she thought she had finally caught a break. He was a Nature flight Spiral, earning a meager living off of various herbs and concoctions of his own making, which he sold at venues that could best be described as less than legitimate. In those days, Serpenta had taken to wearing a scarlet hood that obscured her eyes, having learned that in such public places, flaunting her heritage was a sure way to pick a fight. The Spiral had noticed her brilliant scarlet scales and had introduced himself. Before Serpenta knew what was happening, she found herself rising the next day with the male sleeping peacefully by her side and a smile on her face.

Companionship was something she had never experienced before, and now that she had, she couldn’t fathom living without it. For weeks, she and the Spiral spent every waking moment together and every night curled securely in one another’s embrace. She would follow her new mate on his journeys, watching with awe as he convinced dragons from all walks of life to purchase his wondrous and no doubt bogus concoctions to cure ailments they didn’t even have. She quickly learned the way in which he spoke to others, how he convinced dragons with nothing more than calm reassurances, inviting smiles, and a plethora of charming phrases. Soon she was a far better merchant than he, although he didn’t seem to mind. At first.

As time wore on, however, he grew bored with her stubbornness, her unwillingness to yield even when circumstances demanded it. He grew jealous of her successes, her ability to charm those that he could not. In public, Serpenta always wore her red hood, careful to keep her eyes covered. Her mate alone knew her true heritage. Driven by resentment and insecurity, he sought to destroy Serpenta’s budding reputation in one foul blow. He began to spread rumors of her heritage, claiming she was secretly working to carry out the Plaguebringer’s call, lacing her wares with untraceable contagion and selling them to unsuspecting buyers.

The rumors spread quickly and her customers dwindled. The final blow came when the Spiral exposed her true identity in front of her most loyal customers. Ripping the hood from her face, the Spiral threw it to the ground, shouting hysterically about how she had tried to poison him herself and denouncing her as nothing more than treacherous Plague scum.

Serpenta was devastated. Of course none of the rumors were true, but it didn’t matter. His words produced their desired effect. Her clients evaporated, leaving the Imperial with nothing, and no one to turn to. Alone again, she returned to a life of merely surviving one day to the next.

That is, until she found her true purpose as an ambassador of the Plague flight. Now she could use the skills she had gained as a merchant to convince others of the validity of her words.

And when the time finally came for her to cross the border into the Gladekeeper’s realm, her determination calmed her, and gave her the strength to do so. Once there, she quickly realized that she had failed to heed her own words. Just as other flights had judged hers, she had judged the clans of Nature flight based on nothing more than vague assumptions and stereotypes. Ashamed of her hypocrisy and humbled by the generosity of those she met, Serpenta decided that this was the land she would finally call home.

She soon became a regular at Kageyama’s tavern, a conducive environment for fostering friendship and conversation. Intrigued by her intellect and her message, Kageyama told Kuckuc of the scarlet-scaled Imperial. The matriarch was likewise impressed by the headstrong female, and offered Serpenta a permanent home with her clan as a representative of the Plague flight, with only one catch: she would have to share the position.

Erebus was likewise disappointed, and initially, the two Imperials butted heads on almost everything. Gradually, however, they got to know one another and realized they had more in common than either of them were keen to admit. Neither of them were the other’s picture of an ideal companion, and yet, over time they discovered a kinship between them that was just as resilient as they were. Although they certainly didn’t see one another as a potential mate, they both found a form of companionship in the other that had eluded them their entire lives.
