Biography

--- ---- SMILER
LYSARIEL
--- ---- A thousand years ago, there was a man in the grass who heard rustling. He thought it was a tiger and he ran, but it was just the wind; his friends laughed at him, but he lived. Another man hear rustling and ran, thinking it was a tiger-- and it was a tiger. The third man heard the rustling and thought it was just the wind but it was a tiger, so it killed and ate him. This went on for generations and generations and in the end, we jump at sound in the grass -- because even cowards have more children than the dead do.

Title: Master Assassin Of Disguise
Family: Just one person, a man she calls brother.
Friends: Few. Innumerable, of course. She's a social butterfly.
Physical: Tall, curvy. Hair pulled back/dreaded/down/however she needs to wear it. Pale, pale, pale, and always smiling, like there's a joke she knows the punchline to and you don't.
Aesthetic: Lipstick smeared on the edge of a wineglass (but it's not lipstick, and you shouldn't drink from the cup). The face of your friend (but it isn't your friend). A soft whisper, a gentle kiss to the cheek (but there is poison on her teeth, her skin, and a touch is all she needs to kill). What is lost cannot be found. Not all who wander are lost.

That Smiler is even alive is nothing short of miraculous. Smiler herself doesn't portray it as one, of course. She's too sharp for that. She's too bitter, deep down, to call her life a miracle, but it is. Eamonn, her father, was a foolish man who had eyes bigger than his magical ability; Smiler (Lysariel then, of course) was away from home when Eamonn blew the entire thing apart, snuffing out the lives of himself, his wife, and all of their children in one fell swoop, entirely on accident. Lysariel, the skins of three wild boars over her shoulder and meat in her rucksack, returns home to the burning remains of her family and does not know what to do.

At first, the others of the Elf clan have nothing for her but kind words and well-wishes, but well-wishes do not stop the bitter pain in her heart. Kind words do not turn into gold pieces, and Eamonn left behind debts to men and women who do not care that he is dead. They turn up to her doorstep in the Old Whip Inn and demand that she make good on what her father owes them. Lysariel is still a child by Elf standards and she does not know what to do, but she does not give them any family belongings that she managed to pick from the corpse of what she used to have. This is when she becomes a criminal, hunkered over a home-plan, noticing that her father's haphazard magic left a weakness in the home's construction.

There really is no other option.

The first robbery is a desperate act to pay off a woman known as Flintlock. She takes everything that the man has that's worth anything, practically dumps the stolen goods into Flintlock's lap, watches the brawny crime lord do her calculations. Then, of course, Lysariel finds out the worst truth of all: she's proven that she's got potential, and word will spread. At first, Lysariel doesn't join Flintlock, but when Davius One-Eye comes to her door with a knife and demands she rob for him or find other ways to pay what her father's corpse owes him, Lysariel flees to Flintlock's lair.

Lysariel keeps her true name close to her, then. She knows that there is power in it. She calls herself Smiler, because there's no reason she should let other criminals know what she is, who she is. Lysariel Farstrider dies in the night; Smiler, wicked and sharp and keen and foolish, is born in the remnants of blood, the stickiness of a kill freshmade. She becomes stunningly good t assassinations shockingly quickly. She must, to ensure her life remains her own. When she tries to leave Flintlock's care, however, things turn, and she gains a scar, winding up her side, the narrowly-dodged attempt at gutting her.

So Smiler kills Flintlock, guts her like a fish. She knows she has power, then, and turns her eyes to Darius One-Eye and his enforcers, towards anyone who can connect Smiler to Lysariel; she disguises herself (clumsily, but it works) and does what she must: there are bodies behind her as she carves her way through those who could put face to a name.

Zethaz is a mistake. A woman with crackling energy in her hands who promises Smiler the world, and Smiler is greedy, afraid of those who would kill her, so she takes Zethaz's bargain, wearing the thin necklace around her neck. Smiler serves, taking lives in the name of Zethaz, until she realizes that Zethaz will kill her one day unless she makes the first move.

Slipping Zethaz's collar for another is simple enough: a home in the middle of the forest, a woman within, a darkness that promises Smiler's disguises will be impenetrable and, more importantly, promises that she will be strong enough to free herself from Zethaz. All that's needed in return is loyalty, and Smiler has plenty of that to give. She knows how to weigh dice so it rolls in her favor, but this is different-- She is different. Smiler swears her service. She no longer wears a necklace, but there are stirrings in the back of her head, orders whispering up her spine in a saccharine tone.

The way Smiler sees it, everything is simple: she does her job, and she is left alone.

Smiler is incredibly good at her job. She must be.

(Somewhere, there is a rebuilt home with Lysariel Farstrider's name on the deed, waiting, empty and untouched, collecting dust and cobwebs, pieced together by payments from a mysterious benefactor who never makes herself known.)
