'of the forest' lost child | gentle | sharp 
Lukas's mother remembers him like this - a sweet and gentle hatchling, soft in all ways. But there was something in his eye, a Calling drawing the young guardian away from the safety of home far too young. Nobody knows what happened to him, nobody expected anything to happen to a hatchling so young within the boundaries of his home. But something did happen - he followed that whisper that pulled at his heart, following it to a place where every so briefly time rippled and bent like light on disturbed water. He fell through, and the magic changed him. It rippled through his body and made him something other. In this new place, new time, he was just another hatchling among many without parents to care for them. He had only his name, and a vague sense of having lost something important, and ancient songs that echoed in his mind. No longer a Guardian he no longer had a Charge but an echo of it, a calling from the depths of his bones. A dirge so big as to drown. Never again, it sang; too few, it sang. Time and chance saw him return home, to the starlit autumn wood and glittering rocky shores he'd been hatched by. Drawn back by the same drive that had seen him tumbling away, looking for a place of security for himself and his family to grow and flourish. Little of the gentle hatchling remained in him then, he is now all sharp edges and fighting strength. But not all that softness is gone, for he treats those he cares for with utmost gentleness. Despite the years and the many changes, Lukas's mother still recognized him. She looked at him and at once knew her lost hatchling. How she cannot explain, except to say that he smelled just the same. Like the softness of meadows and the tang of ancient dust. |
