INFO Fireheart was one of the hatchlings that had lain dormant in the ancient Banescale lair for hundreds of years. Protected from the deadly icestorm by the sacrifice of their Clan’s elders, and eventually brought to life by a stream of lava fused with elemental magic. Her memories of her birth were fragmented and blurred. She remembered the heat of the molten rock, the cries of the other hatchlings for parents long dead, a feeling of sorrow and an inexplicable powerful urge to leave the tomb of her ancestors. So she left with the other hatchlings, a flock of thousands of small creatures taking awkwardly to the skies which would become their home eventually. Soon, the flock of hatchlings dispersed, splitting into smaller groups. Fireheart flew north, over a great sea and forests immersed in darkness and shadows. Some decided to stay by the great water or to seek shelter in the dark woods. But Fireheart kept flying north. Weary and hungry she finally touched down beside a small stream in a swampy marshland. Only two other hatchlings had accompanied her this far and she eyed them closely for the first time. A slim green female who immediately immersed herself in the water, hunting for small fish, and a sturdy brown dragoness who sunk to the ground wearily. Fireheart herself staggered from exhaustion but she knew instinctively that someone had to keep watch and make sure they were safe. None of three companions spoke a word when the green female gracefully climbed out of the water and began sharing her catch with them. They just ate in silence. Suddenly, the green female raised her head, sniffing the air and snarled. Fireheart and the other female spun around in unison, ready to face whatever had startled their sister. There was another dragon walking towards them. Not a Banescale, and not one of their ancient enemies. This one was slender female, with dark green eyes and she carried a pearl with her. She smiled at them and Fireheart was immediately sure that she meant them no harm. When she spoke, Fireheart didn’t understand the words, but the intention behind them was clear. Nodding reassuringly to her sisters, she followed the grey dragon with the golden wings to her lair. In the days and weeks to come Fireheart and her sisters were cared for by the dragoness that had found them. The Clan took them in, as no hatchlings should be left to fend for their own. It wasn’t natural, they said. Fireheart struggled to learn their language and adapt to their strange customs but after a while the place felt like home. The Clan’s Elders were eager to hear their stories, fascinated by what they called innate memories when the sight of their old enemies send Fireheart into a fit of rage. Her memories were fragmented though, and it couldn’t be her own either because she was only a hatchling. The Clan’s mages said it must be due to some sort of strange unknown magic that was woven when the Banescale Elders sacrificed themselves to protect their unborn children. Whatever it was, it made her proud and uneasy at the same time. She was proud to be chosen to keep the memories of her breeds’ history and downfall alive, proud to be the one to lead them into a new and hopefully prosperous future. But she was also deeply uneasy because those memories weren’t her own and felt strange and alien sometimes. Fireheart and her sisters eventually decided to stay. They dug their lair deep into the steep cliff overlooking the Gladeveins. Only dragons who were able fliers would be able to access their tunnels which excluded their old archenemies. Even if they seemed to have forgotten the ancient wars, Fireheart and her sisters hadn’t. She just wasn’t able yet to turn over a new leaf but she was determined to become part of this new Clan even if it meant that old enemies had to become allies. They would never be family though. Some things couldn’t be forgiven. |
