Biography

Name and Title: Casper, Angel Citizen

Background: When Casper's egg was laid, his parents were killed. Some of the last of the remaining Banescales. Casper died in his egg; he ran out of nutrients, his body hadn't rationed them well. The Arcanist saw this young, not even born yet, child die. He took pity on the little thing in the egg and renewed Casper's strength. The Arcanist provided the egg with all he could need to stay alive until banescales were to rise again. Years and years passed. Decades; centuries; eons, for all this baby banescale knew. Then he felt a power surge through him. He began to fight against his egg; there was a dragon somewhere nearby. A dragon that might be able to help him. He finally broke through the egg, immediately blinded by the light of the sun; something he had never seen before. When his eyes adjusted, he saw a huge black-and-red dragon with blue eyes; except the white of his eyes were red. The dragon terrified the little hatchling. The dragon was already watching the tiny Casper. Moments passed, then the huge male slowly approached him, crouching down to his level and gently reaching out a wing; he pulled the little hatchling into his body, the warmth of the dragon's skin reflecting off the fireproof wings, warming him in half the time. When he got used to the temperature, the big dragon loosened his grip, letting him cool off a little. Without a word, the big dragon carefully picked the hatchling up in one claw grip before taking to the sky. The clouds were cold and wet, and soon he was shivering. Thankfully, the trip was a short one. They arrived in a large clan within less than an hour, the vast number of dragons terrifying the poor child. He was settled down in front of a bright blue skydancer and violet and pink pearlcatcher.
"Daichi, what have you brought us?" The skydancer asked. The big banescale dipped his head in greeting.
"On patrol, I found an egg. It started shaking, then it hatched. This is the hatchling that came out. I believe Princess Agion has a bit of an affinity for banescales; I figured she may want to inspect him; he may be of use when he grows up." Daichi explains. The skydancer scoffs.
"Agion and her foolish love for ancient species! This thing is ten times smaller than you were or any other banescale here! He'll never amount to anything," she sneers. The young banescale growls lowly, not quite sure what's going on but well aware that she had just insulted him. Daichi gently pulls the hatchling back, closer to his belly.
"I'll take that to our Guard, and allow them to make that decision. You allowed Agion to lead this clan; as such, you are only to be treated as another respected elder. You do not have any claim to the throne any longer," he growls. He picks up the small hatchling in his wings and carries him over to two pearlcatchers and another banescale.
"Princess Agion, Pathera," he murmurs, nodding to each of them. "I found a banescale hatchling on patrol. He's small, but his instincts are strong," he explains. The grey spotted pearlcatcher approaches, sniffing the hatchling curiously. At the sight of the pearl, the hatchling cocks his head to the side curiously. Following his gaze, the pearlcatcher's eyes light up with amusement. He pulls the pearl closer to the little banescale, showing it to him.
"Each pearlcatcher creates his own pearl," he explains quietly. "This one is mine. It gets bigger and bigger whenever something important happens," he whispers. "I am Pathera. You will be a strong dragon when you grow older. I doubt you'll ever be part of the Guard, but perhaps you'll be of other use." Daichi narrows his eyes slightly.
"I'll train him myself, if you won't," Daichi growls. Pathera looks up at the banescale, shaking his head.
"If you wish. He will not be part of the Guard. He may grow to be someone important someday, but not here. You can train him all you'd like, but he will never be part of the Guard." Pathera looks down at the hatchling. "You seem attached to him. You'll raise him. You will protect him. He's your responsibility." Daichi sighs but nods before looking to Agion.
"Will you allow him to stay, if I care for him?" He asks. Agion tilts her head, inspecting the hatchling.
"There's something... Odd about him. I want to see what it happens to be," she replies. "He'll stay with you in the clan." Daichi nods, tapping the hatchling's head with one claw thoughtfully.
The years passed and Casper grew up. He never grew to be as big as any other banescale, but he's no longer small enough to be carried in one claw by Daichi. Just as he'd promised, Daichi raised Casper to be a strong banescale -- though that doesn't mean Casper can hold his own against any of his well-trained clanmates. He's still no warrior, and he's accepted that he never will be.
As time went on, Casper and Daichi became closer than ever. Some dragons claim that Casper is mistaking gratefulness for love, but he and Daichi both know that's not the case. Although Casper will always be grateful for what Daichi did for him, his love for Daichi is much, much stronger. He hates to be away from Daichi longer than it takes for the older dragon to gon on a patrol. If Daichi has to go away for much longer, he always begs Agion to allow him to accompany the party. She usually refuses, sending the banescale into a depressive episode until Daichi returns to their tunneled-out den.
