Motto: “Even if the pen is mightier than the sword, I’m still going to carry my rapier with me just in case.”

“Just this once, dear? Come on, it always ends beautifully. Today the blood moon is out, and it’s a special night for us astronomers. Imagine it! An hour under the stars, together. Won’t it be simply wonderful?” A tan-beige Nocturne stood near another dragon, the former being quietly excited while the latter bored and irritable. The first dragon continued, “You know, I’ve been worrying for you lately. Maybe you should slow down? Perhaps it would be better for you to stop seeking danger. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if something happened to you.”

“Are you insulting me, Thoth? You know how I live for adventure. And nothing will ever happen to me – you should well know that! I can certainly take care of myself, and we can watch the blood moon anytime – we’re immortal, which is something I shouldn’t have to remind you. Why don’t you join me on a trek through the hills? That will be fun.” Marzanna smiled and fluttered gently around her mate, inviting him on her next adventure. Her wings brushed some leaves, covering them with frost, and she grinned innocently.

But Thoth had had enough, and wasn’t interested in joking around. “Marzanna, I just went to the forest with you earlier today! You haven’t sat and watched the stars with me for months now, and the blood moon isn’t all that frequent! We can’t just go watch it whenever we want like with your little runs. Honestly, that’s hardly fair! I really want us to just be next to each other under the night sky, love. Just us, claw-in-claw.” His voice softened at the end, his face donning a sad expression. “Please?”

His mate sighed, and nodded, much to Thoth’s delight. “Well, I suppose that would be only fair. A little moon-watching couldn’t hurt, right? It might not be as thrilling as an icy trip, but anything is better with you.” She paused, and then shuddered. “When did I start spouting sappiness like a fountain? What love does to a dragon.” She heaved a great, dramatic sigh.

The two shared a laugh, and then Marzanna followed Thoth through the trees. He flew over, she flew under, then they switched, and they twisted around each other as two parts of a whole. It was perfect, pure affection radiating from the both of them.

Finally the male stopped, and quite abruptly so, as his mate crashed into him and sent the two of them tumbling into the nearest bush. The shrub quickly froze over at Marzanna’s touch, but Thoth himself was unharmed, immune to her danger. After a few apologies from the both of them and a quick dusting off, Thoth turned to the other dragon. He smiled at her, and she smiled at him, and he pushed a small log in the center of the clearing as a seat. They both sat down to watch the show, gazing upwards, but Marzanna’s face was perplexed.

“Where is this blood moon you mentioned earlier?” she questioned, seeing not a trace of red in the sky.

“Just wait,” he simply replied, gently locking his right claws with her left. Trusting her mate, Marzanna’s chin rested on the shoulder of her slightly smaller S.O., who was glancing at the night sky worriedly. It was supposed to be happening now. Had he calculated wrong? He couldn’t have, after spending so long preparing for this.

So they waited, and waited, and Marzanna fell asleep, tired from her earlier escapades and quite bored out of her mind. Thoth didn’t blame her; where were the spectacular meteors? The flaming, sun-like moon? The romantics that were to end the night? It was all so disappointing.

Gently, Thoth shook the female awake. “Let’s go,” he whispered apologetically. “I thought it was going to be lovely out tonight, but I suppose I made a mistake and wasted your time.” Marzanna looked at him thoughtfully, and shook her head.

“But it’s never a waste of my time if I’m with you. That’s how it’s always been, that’s how it always will be.” She nuzzled into comfortingly, pulling his dejected form into her cold, yet warm embrace. “There’s always a next time. Plus, you’ve got work to do.” Her ears flickered around, picking up ethereal sounds. “There’s a whole line of dead waiting for you, and Anubis and Osiris are getting a tad impatient with all of those moaning whiners trying to weigh their own hearts. You know how that ends.”

They both smiled, and Thoth nodded. “No sleep for the wicked, hmm?” he mused, eyes shining with delight. Marzanna scoffed and rolled her eyes mockingly.

“You? Wicked? I can’t even imagine that. What will you do, read me boring stories to death?” Suddenly her face grew serious. “Don’t take my advice, Thoth. No. I will not stand to listen to your tales of boredom!”

At this notion, he laughed, eyebrows cocked suspiciously. “Who says I won’t? No, no, I’m just kidding. Sort of.” He winked at her, but gave an assuring smile. “Let’s get back to the clan before they think we’re having too much fun. Or before there’s a search party out there looking for a certain ‘missing’ pair of dragons,” he joked, and the pair began to fly back, still weaving around each other.

They were halfway back when Marzanna gasped. “No, Thoth! You weren’t wrong! Look,” she cried, gazing up into the midnight air with absolute wonder. Rocks with flame-lit tails shot across the sky, lighting the navy blue tone with orange. Then something rose over the horizon, but it was not the sun, nor the average moon. The celestial body that moved the waves was dark crimson, aptly named, basking the land in a vermillion glow.

Thoth and Marzanna smiled at each other again, locking claws, and touched their foreheads together. It was indeed a wonderful night, and the goddess said, “I appreciate all of this so much. I’d never have been able to do so much research and perfectly plan this out. Tonight was absolutely amazing.”

Then, before they set off, she whispered, “I love you,” and he whispered it back.
