The Grim One had been watching, waiting for new souls to make an appearance. It was its job to convert the souls to spirits, and give them the ability to think again. Souls are a manifestation of the being's inner self, but they are not sentient. The Grim One pondered what a soul was, chewed on one of the bones it was adorned in, and did a figure eight in the air. Finally, a new soul had shown up. Well, not finally, as souls came and went in immense haste, but something about this one was different. The Grim One waved their claws, and a dragon materialized in front of it. They were a grey and orange Guardian, much like the visual form that The Grim One took on. The spiritual magic had turned some of the young Guardian's markings blue, and a strange, wispy aura surrounded them. They laid on the ground, in the same position they had died in. The Grim One looked into the physical world for a second, to see how they'd died. The Grim One spectated the past, and as it saw the arrow go through their head, it winced.

"Ooohhhh, fumbleeeee!"

The Grim One watched the young Guardian twitch as it exclaimed. It closed the window to the physical world, and focused on the newfound spirit. They looked very disoriented, as most new spirits do. The Grim One grinned from under its hood, and lead with its number one question, "Feelin' okay, bud?" The dragon looked even more disoriented, per usual, and furrowed their brow.

They paused for a second, and then muttered, "Wut?" The Grim One let out a chuckle, as that's what most dragons said when they were conjured into the spiritual world.

"Welcome to the spirit world, buddy," The Grim One tried to make itself as inviting as possible, and sat down in front of them. "Any questions?"

"Uh-uhhhh...... there's, well, quite a lot." The young Guardian seemed to be regaining consciousness. "I'm not sure you want to answer twenty million questions."

The Grim One let out another gravelly chuckle. "Nope, I answer twenty million questions every five minutes." Another soul had made an appearance, and The Grim One waved its claws. The dragon materialized, and let out a grunt. They were a bright pink Spiral, complete with Arcane eyes.

"How long was I asleep?" The Spiral mumbled, slowly raising themself to their feet. They stumbled over their tail.

"About.. what, five minutes?" The Grim One grinned. "Welcome to the spirit world, bud."

"THE WHAT?!" They yelled, in response to The Grim One.

"Go see one of my assistants," The Grim One said, "I'm quite busy."

"Huh?!" The Spiral launched themself into the air, and tied themself into a knot. "I am SO confused...!"

"Yup," The Grim One nodded. "Typical. Now go approach some spooky-lookin dragons!"

The Spiral untied themself, and flew off hastily. The Grim One turned its attention back to the Guardian it was talking to previously.

"The.... the huh, uh, world?" The Guardian wore a worried expression.

"The spirit world! Uh, you kind of, like, died." The Grim One chuckled. It glanced back at the young dragon, and their eyes were wide.

"Oh... I, uh, remember..." Their voice trailed off.

"Yup, uh, we got therapy if you need it." The Grim One anxiously tapped its claws as another soul appeared. It waved its claws, and a yellow, white, and red Coatl materialized. They had piebald markings, with wispy stripes adorning their entire body. They immediately stood up, stumbled, and clenched their fist, letting loose a string of profanities. "Uh, you good, man?" The Grim One inquired.

"Yeah, I-" the Coatl growled. "WAIT, WHERE AM I?!"

"The spirit world!" The Grim One hopped into the air, and fell back into a sitting position. Both the Coatl and the Guardian gaped in awe at the sight of The Grim One's levitation abilities. "Now, go seek out one of my assistants. Ask around, everyone knows 'em!"

"U-uuhh- AAAAHHHHH!!!!!" The Coatl screamed in terror as they hastily jumped into the air and flew off.

"Aw, I can't be that scary.." The Grim One turned its attention back to the Guardian. "So, tell me a bit about yourself?"

The Guardian seemed to be deep in though, before they snapped back to reality and said, "Oh, uh, hey! I'm, uh.. my name is Flametalon, but my friends call me Tal. Well, called... um. My pronouns are.." Tal trailed off.

The Grim One grinned, and exclaimed, "Well, hey, Tal! You're my friend now. Um, what were your pronouns again?"

Tal furrowed their brow. "Um," they hesitated, then inhaled. "She/her."

"Oh my god, yes girl!" The Grim One put its foreclaw under its chin and tilted its head. "Sorry, I couldn't resist." It returned to its normal deep and gravelly voice, and grinned, as its plan to make Tal laugh succeeded. "So, Tal, you seem to be a deep-minded individual. Would you like to become one of my assistants once you get accustomed to the spirit world?"

"Um," Tal lowered their head a bit. "Am I allowed to back out if I agree? It seems like fun, but I just met you, and it might be a little overwhelming."

"Whatever, hun," The Grim One lowered itself back to the ground, and continued, "I'd just be happy to have another assistant for a while, hehe!"

"Consider it done, then!"
