The Protector That Remains

The cavern would be sealed soon. She could feel it. The dropping temperature, the lava flow that had been used to warm the eggs slowing to a trickle, the crunch of ice sealing together stone. She and the other elders had saved the eggs from instant annihilation sure, but as the barrier finally came down, she had seen the doubt and fear fall over the others faces with it. No matter. The banescale began to settle down, careful to huddle as many eggs close to her warmth as possible. She swore it to herself then, head resting gently over an egg. One day, these eggs would see freedom and safety. One day.

The elders had lain in the cave for weeks. They had kept up the singing, the desperate need not to think about the ones lost in battle combined with the urge to do something, anything. Even as Fugue and the other elders grew weaker, the flames warming the eggs dimming, her will to see the eggs to safety did not diminish. Not even in death. After her body wasted away, her spirit remained, watching the dormant eggs with fervor. When the lava flow shifted, melting the great barrier sealed so long ago, most of her remains met the same fate as the other elders, and fell into the lava. Save for her skull, which had been carried off by the banescale hatched from the egg she had rested her head upon so long ago, Dirge.

Fugue isn't quite sure if it being lost would have destroyed or dispelled or exorcised whatever she is now, but she appreciated the thought.

Despite her fierce protectiveness, especially of Dirge, she rarely manifests a physical form. Usually only in situations of extreme danger. But she's rather content to shelter the Flamecaller's first children in other ways from beyond the veil. For the days Dirge was trapped beneath the rocks with her remains, she sung her the old songs, assuring her everything would be alright. She may not have bonded with other banescales quite as well as with Dirge and Anthem, but other children of the cavern tend to have an easier time rousing her from her rest than other dragons.
