She showed up one day, replying to an ad that had been placed, looking for a cook for the school and the guards. She had been raised by a very insular and isolated clan that spoke an odd language all their own, and had a hard time adjusting to the common tongue.
"You seem very enthusiastic about the job. Where do you picture yourself in five years?"
"Here," she said. "Me is lunch lady now."
The hiring committee looked at each other. "You don't have arms," one of them ventured, finally.
"Covered by Dragons Disability Act," she said. "What time for lunch? I making wiener wraps. Is little hot dog wrapped in biscuit."
School cook positions are not the easiest to fill, especially at boarding schools where the meal planning and serving have to cover weekends as well. We needed a dragon who would serve simple, hearty meals. We had plenty of other cooks, some who were excellent at planning and serving feasts at our large clan gatherings, but nobody can afford to feed students on a constant schedule of roast pigs and expensive alcohols. And so, Lloydann was hired, only partly because we were afraid she'd sue if she didn't get the job.
Nobody is quite sure where she sources some of her ingredients. Possibly her birth clan of secretive cooks had given her secret access to a mail order source. But she stays within the budget, and the food is edible. And she genuinely does seem to like the work.

In a nearly forgotten, well hidden corner of Sornieth, there is a small, rocky island. Even for dragons who fly exceptionally well, it is difficult to reach, due to its distance from other land masses. The island is home to a very ancient and secretive clan of dragons, who tend the ancient prison located there.
The dragons imprisoned here are no ordinary criminals. They are intensely dangerous, so dangerous that most of them are confined indefinitely. Some have been here for centuries. They have a routine, and prison walls are augmented with magic that makes them more docile, less rebellious.
The arrival of a new prisoner is a very rare occasion indeed. They will be brought by a cadre of specially trained guards, chained all together. The guards will land on the rocky outcropping that holds the forbidding prison. The dragons who live on the island will have already gathered there, intently interested in the new arrival. A scroll will be produced, and a list of the prisoner’s crimes and their sentence will be read aloud. The guards will take the prisoner inside, and with help from the prison guards, confine the newest guest to a cell where they will stay until the prison’s magical walls have begun to do their work, and the prisoner can join in the daily routine of the prison, maybe even getting a job copying books. The books are then sold to clans on the mainland, in a quarterly trip to the trading post. This scribe work is how the prison earns extra funds, with which the prisoners are allowed to upgrade the common areas, add small comforts to their own cells, or order in special food for feast days or holidays.
The dragons who live here without being prisoners began as guards and jailers, of course. They were good at it. But as the magic imbued in the very walls of the prison began to do its job, the need to guard and protect lessened. Instead, the dragons began to be mostly concerned with health needs of the prisoners. Some became nurses and doctors, healers. But most of the clan formed the Secret Society of Lunch Ladies, or SSLL. Providing nutritious, inexpensive food when trapped on a rocky island with few natural resources is not an easy task, but the SSLL have managed it for hundreds of years. They have mail order sources for some foods, a small herd of goats to provide them with milk, and a prison garden that grows turnips and arugula in the rocky soil.
As the centuries passed, the languages of the mainland changed, but the dragons on the small prison island still speak a dialect untouched by time. They are able to communicate in Common, but with some difficulty. This is often surprising to new inmates. The inmates who have been “guests” of the prison the longest still prefer to speak the old dialect too, and those who have been there a medium amount of time are the most fluent in both.
The SSLL did not grow quickly, but it did grow. Some of the dragons produced nests from time to time, and they raised their young in the path of the Lunch Lady or Lunch Lad. But the rocky and inhospitable island is small, and not all of the young can stay. So they have begun to spread out, to reply to ads from mainland clans seeking school lunch cooks, prison cooks, military cooks, and more. Perhaps your clan, too, could use a lunch lad or lady?
