A Free Dragon
Instinctive - Independent - Fearless

Everyone thought the Banescales were eradicated, save for one clutch of eggs entombed in a cavern below the Ashfall Waste. But they were not the only eggs left behind by this Ancient Breed.

Kazhos came to consciousness, enclosed in darkness. It was cold and wet. He tried to extend a wing and encountered a barrier. He moved his tail, and met the same hard but slimy surface. It was all around him, every direction he reached out in, but he was not worried. It was almost as if something whispered in the back of his mind that this was normal, nothing to fear. That he need only push, and he would be free.

Freedom.

The little dragon braced his back against this wall and pressed his wings out against the wall in front of him. Nothing. He paused to gather his strength, and pushed again, harder. Still, nothing budged.

Kazhos maneuvered his legs out in front of him, and took a moment to focus his will and determination on breaking through this barrier. He then pushed out again with his wings and his claws, with all of his strength. He pushed and pushed for what seemed like ages before he brought his tail around and pushed with that too. And finally, when he thought his strength might fail him, he heard a crack.

Though the exertion left him feeling weak and his heart pounded in his chest, Kazhos felt around until he found a small fracture in the surface where his spines had been pressed against the wall. He had not broken all the way through, but he centered his focus now on the weak spot and pushed again. It broke.

Freedom.

Cold water rushed into this opening, and for a fraction of a second he was afraid he might drown before that same little voice spoke up again. This was fine too. If water was a threat, he would have died long ago.

Kazhos pushed his head out of this opening, taking in a deep breath. The black smoke that emanated continuously from his mouth floated and swirled upwards. There appeared to be a very dim light source somewhere far above, and very little light made it through the slightly murky water that surrounded him on all sides. But Kazhos could see even in the dark that he was at the bottom of a deep body of water. Possibly an underwater cavern. The expanse of sand and silt before him was enclosed on three sides by walls of rock, and his egg was nestled into a crevice in one of those walls. They sloped inward as they rose, and the floor seemed to rise toward the opening. In the far corner, a never-ending jet of water flowed from another crevice in the cavern's floor, emitting a low rumble that was oppressive after so long in silence.

Something whispered to him again. He had to continue. To move.

Kazhos pushed further out of the opening he had created in his egg, until his shoulders hit the sides. It was too small. He withdrew again and used his horns now to chip at the jagged edges of the shell until he felt the hole was wide enough to fit through. It took a little bit of squeezing and some additional breaking as he went, but after a minute or so, he finally emerged fully from his egg and into the water.

Freedom.

Swimming somehow came naturally to Kazhos. He moved easily through the water, gliding silently, his smoke trailing behind him. He did not waste much time exploring this underwater chamber. There was nothing else there. No signs that any living creature had visited in a very long time. There was a gentle current that flowed up and out, and Kazhos followed it.

It did not seem like long, though Kazhos had no real indication of time here in the dark, silent water, before he discovered the top of the cavern and the light source he had seen from below. Bioluminescent algae covered patches of the rock ceiling. The opening in the rock was narrowing, and eventually became a tunnel about twenty feet wide that curved back and forth, he lost count of how many times. The current became stronger, and he hardly had to swim as it rushed him along.

Suddenly, the tunnel narrowed to half its width, and Kazhos was pushed through an opening and out into open water.

Freedom.

Kazhos had awoken in a cavern, formed naturally deep in the Leviathan Trench, but dug out and adapted for use as a den. Or so he gathered. He assumed that his clan had perished somehow, leaving his egg behind. The vent must have recently become active again and warmed the water enough for him to hatch. He had no way of knowing how long he had been there, enclosed in darkness, cold, before he awoke. But it must have been a long time.

The Leviathan Trench was a dangerous place, especially for a hatchling. The deep, dark waters were inhabited by strange creatures and giant monsters that fed on those smaller or weaker than themselves. Kazhos survived by staying out of their way at first, listening to that little voice that had helped him to escape his egg, his instinct. And as he became larger and stronger, he joined the ranks of the beasts that lived in the Trench.

But Kazhos avoided dragons. He was not sure why, but that little voice told him that there would be nothing but trouble if he was discovered.

And so, for the first few years of his life, Kazhos lived alone, returning to that same den he had awoken in.
