Hailing from the edge of the Shifting Expanse, Kahiki came to the clan young. After the return of the Banescale, the hidden chorus where she hatched dispersed to nearby clans, but Kahiki was given to Kodiak, who had been scavenging nearby, to take and raise back at Traveler's Rest. Kahiki spent much of her childhood roaming the airship hangar beneath the city, and quickly picked up small mechanical tasks. Many would have thought that a dragon lacking hands (or even front legs) couldn't be an engineer, but Kahiki and her mentor, Zinn, proved them wrong. Kahiki quickly picked up on how all the different tools were used, and began to find her own ways to use them. A wrench was held in her prehensile tail, a hammer cleverly attached to her wing, her Lightning magic repurposed into a welding torch. Zinn took her on as an apprentice, where she quickly learned how to service the various vehicles and devices employed by the clan. Zinn often calls her in to help, seeing as her Lightning mind can make better sense of complicated machines than his Ice-oriented view. Kahiki doesn't spend much time with the other Banescale, on account of her long work hours, but she does enjoy hanging out with them. She's not as good a singer as Haleakala, or as good a fighter as Fugue, but she enjoys hearing their stories. She also helps the First Five come up with solutions to help disabled dragons or those with unconventional anatomy, seeing as she has firsthand experience with having to make her own tools that fit her body plan. |
