I never expected to be the Charge of a guardian. When it happened, I didn’t even know what Charge was! I just didn’t want some dumb guardian tagging along with me!

When my father explained it to me, I just stared at him for several long moments, “You mean I’m stuck with him hanging around me for the rest of my life?” (Yes, I was a bit of a brat back then.)

My father slapped the ground hard enough to make me jump, “He is a Guardian and you are his CHARGE. It is an honor to have one.” He looked down at me, eyes sharp as lightning, “You will be kind to him. I don’t know where you got this idea of being better than anyone else, but that nonsense stops here and it stops NOW!”

After my ears quit ringing, I went to find Garamond. He was at the practice ring, taking instruction in the finer points of fighting Webwings. (Don’t laugh. That was serious stuff for a hatchling back then.)

He watched me carefully out of the sides of his eyes. I hadn’t been exactly nice when he’d told the world I was his charge, “Um...hi.” I looked at the dirt because I was too ashamed to look him in the face.

“Hello,” his voice was already deeper than mine’s then. There was a long pause, “You wanna practice with me?”

I brought my head up to look at him. He showed no discomfort, no embarrassment, just honest curiosity. “I’d like that,” I said falling into place on his flank.

It’s the position I’ve been ever since, guarding his flank as he has guarded mine. In all things, that is until Skye showed up. Then EVERYTHING changed
