Originally coming from the harsh area of the Shifting Planes, Gardenia and Cereus decided to retire from working on the Stormcatcher’s many *shocking* projects and build a new life within the realm of the Gladekeeper. Promising him to build a civilization that would be useful to his realm, they gained the Gladekeeper’s trust and protection as they began building their new village near a vibrant child of the Behemoth.

As the founder of Willowfern, Gardenia has taken to being the village mother figure, at least for most of Willowfern’s residents. This comes to a great comfort for Gardenia, as Cereus suffered two miscarriages (both Cereus and Gardenia are trans) and the children that did make it now serve the Gladekeeper. Though it was their choice, Gardenia misses them deeply and wishes they would write her more often.
While her biological children hardly visit her, she gets to see plenty of other hatchlings and dragons alike. Every new and full moon, Gardenia either reads old, fantastical tales or entertains her listeners with stories of her childhood and the history of Willowfern.

HUSBAND
Though he may seem grumpy on the outside, Cereus is truly the most affectionate and loving dragon Gardenia had ever met. Seeing how lovingly he acts towards small furry animals made Gardenia fall for him instantly, and she, also being smaller than most and furry. also caught the eye of Cereus. Though he is not very affectionate in public, Cereus is the most wonderful husband Gardenia could ever ask for, and the only husband she could ever want.
Aspartame, originally living in the neighboring city, Havandish, needed a place to open up his cafe. Luckily, Gardenia had just founded Willowfern and was inviting people to move in and build up the village. Aspartame, thrilled with the idea of having his own cafe without any competition whatsoever took advantage of the offer without a second thought. Gardenia and Aspartame quickly bonded over their love of tea and sweet treats, amongst being married to grumpy but sweet spouses as well as being parents. Gardenia can easily say that Aspartame is her closest friend.

Upon seeing Gardenia and Cereus be caught defenseless while starting up the village of Willowfern, Olive quickly rushed in to guard them from the bakusnout that was about to take a big bite out of Gardenia’s leg. Thankful for the help, Gardenia invited Olive and his girlfriend, Extasis to live with them until they could build a different home so that the two couples could live separately. As both Extasis and Olive were running away from a very unkind clan, they accepted the invitation and slept over. Later, after Extasis’s accident, Gardenia helped Olive (mostly) overcome his guilt and they became great friends along the way.

HISTORY
Born in the shifting expanse, Gardenia’s original fate was to spend her whole life working for the Stormcatcher. She had no known parents or other family members, though she did have many friends as a hatchling. They too would work their lives for the Stormcatcher, but unlike her, they were inspired and even excited by the prospect. Knowing something was missing, Gardenia eventually worked up the courage to run away, leaving behind all of the friends she had made during her time there. Now, completely and utterly alone as she had never before been, Gardenia went to explore the city.
The highland city was more colorful and full of life than she could have ever imagined, with not just dragons affiliated with the Stormcatcher, but dragons from all over Sorienth! And, one small green thing on the ground caught her eye. A leaf! How shiny, how vibrant! Gardenia was well aware of what a leaf was, thanks to the books in the Copper Cave library, but she had never seen one in person! Looking up, she realized that there were plants in all sorts of places, and she instantly knew that that’s what was missing. Feeling determined and inspired, Gardenia marched into the town square to inquire about such a place.
The first dragon she met, who was also a tundra... around her age? Seemed extremely overwhelmed and a little sick to his stomach. Seeing a fellow tundra peer in such a state, Gardenia’s motherly instincts kicked in and she lead him through the crowd into a place a little quieter. Though Gardenia inquired about his well being and if he needed anything or not, the tundra remained quiet, and slightly dazed, though he did not protest Gardenia’s nearby presence.
Eventually, when he regained his composure, the tundra finally spoke. “Thanks for leading me out.” His voice was already quite deep, and a little gruff, even though they were only young dragons.
Gardenia, pleased to see him looking well, replied. “Of course, my friend! I wouldn’t want to see a person’s sick within my first hour above ground. Oh, and my name is Gardenia, by the way! What’s yours?”
“Cereus”, said Cereus. “I’m new up here too, I just quit apprenticing with a geomancer, and while this little spot is nice and all, I would like to get out of here. Not just here but the whole blasted realm of the Stormcatcher.”
Gardenia, surprised at Cereus’s boldness to badmouth the stormcatcher in his own realm, found herself drawn to his assertiveness. “I plan to leave the shifting expanse as well, hopefully in a place with lots of greenery and people less obsessed with work. Would you like to join me?”
“Yes, that sounds wonderful.” And with that, the two tundras, after consulting with some people at a stand with random shiny trinkets, headed south to the realm of the Gladekeeper.

The journey was long, and it was hard not to get lost. Neither Gardenia or Cereus knew much about plants, nor had ever seen much of them, so it was a whole different world. Trees, flowers, birds and all sorts of other wildlife surrounded them. It was beautiful. It felt right. Sometimes they would hear the sounds of various creatures who were both defensive of their home, but also curious about the two of them, so they watched from afar. After they observed them and determined that the two of them meant no harm, they all just followed curiously behind. A few small rodents especially took interest in Cereus, and Cereus actually smiled at them and let them ride on his back. It was very sweet. Eventually they came across the most glorious, giant tree ever. It must be as big as the Great Behemoth itself! Gardenia had heard of a few large trees before, one being a behemoth and the other being a willow. She mistakenly determined that the tree was a willow, thanks to the couple of low growing branches. Also, beneath the canopy of this tree, there were many beautiful, short plants such as ferns, wildflowers, moss and grass. The moss felt especially nice below their tired feet, and they decided that this was it- the beginning of their new home. They set up camp.

The sun was nearly finished setting already, and they heard the sounds of all the nocturnal creatures waking up. They hadn’t done their research properly, so they hadn’t realized that the creatures of the night were much less docile than the ones they had encountered during the day. They quickly found this out as a bakusnout suddenly jumped out behind some bushes and attacked Gardenia! Its claws were very sharp, and the two of them were ill prepared for combat. Working on intricate electric circuits in Gardenia’s case did not prepare her for anything requiring strength, and in the case of Cereus, performing magic did not exactly build up muscle. They tried very hard to get the beast off of her, and just as they thought that this would be the end of at least one of Gardenia’s limbs, a speedy Banescale jumped out of seemingly nowhere and tackled the beast. This dragon was clearly trained in combat, as he got more than a few hits in before it fled the scene. It was incredible.
