THE RATKING
Optimistic • Impulsive • Erratic

"My house will be for all people who have nowhere to go,
My supply of shining crystals a shield against the snow,
There's more like me where I come from,
So mark our shapes."

-- 1 Samuel 15:23, the Mountain Goats
Rat is an exuberant and often overwhelming presence within any space in Axiom, and not even the strangest sight. The Shade has always been a fixture in the lives of its inhabitants, and when Rat came in, it wasn’t that hard to accept that it could also mean well and form a genuine kinship with a dragon. The Rat King is a fusion, existing of a soothsayer called Passarella, and a Shade parasite who received the name Rat when May met them. The line between the two is virtually indistinguishable and only rarely does either ones personality show up individually. The personality that exists now, the Rat King, is an easily excited individual described as “annoying” and “a scourge upon good manners”. They don’t give much thought to their actions beyond if it makes them smile, and often this concerns playing pranks on Axiom’s residents or conducting their own experiments on local plant life.

The way they truly get to channel their particular knack for chaos, however, is in their job as Nicholas’ live-in Shade Abomination and soothsayer. Nic sends them out, tailed by Feldspar if someone needs to be taught a lesson, and so far it’s worked splendidly. Even in case of a takedown, it’s never stuck, and Rat always rises again for a second round. The soothsaying is a thing both Fortunato and May have a more vested interest in, while Nicholas excuses herself and promptly disappears from the room. Rat doesn’t mind being a curiosity all that much, they view themselves as such, and so far the only enemy they’ve ever made has been one of Nicholas’ cultists, Sacarver.

lGy6A2u.png Passarella’s story started in a deep cave somewhere out on the Shifting Expanse, carefully hatched by a local quack doctor. Her egg stolen long ago, Passarella never knew any true parents and found her friends in the crystals and scriptures the charlatan kept in his cave, growing into a quiet and overly serious figure. The actual craft of her caretaker never touched her and instead she found her solace in the unexplored passages of the cave instead, bringing back crystals so she’d have some evidence of productivity. She’d sit in the darkness for hours, unable to even see her hands. It was in one of these many hideaways that she had her first revelation of the future. It told her she would meet with a many-eyed child of monsters, and a burning wheel, and that they’d stand on either side of her. She most alarmingly saw herself, not as something she could interpret as recognizable, but as a great big gaping hole in reality. All she knew was that there was a feeling of love needling itself into her heart, seeping from every pore of this vision. She didn’t mention her vision to her guardian, nor any subsequent ones, knowing that she was going to change in a drastic way, and that she would only become a curiosity to be shown off by her warden. It was why she eventually left, plagued by too many visions of these strange people and their companions. In the dead of the night she left with a single bag and a comfy cloak, heading into the moonless night.
Her chance encounter with the entity later known as Rat occurred when she found her way into Providence territory, in the canyon of Lantana Linn. Having established herself as a soothsayer at this point, she was summoned by Altair, the leader of the cult of Providence, to tell him his fortune. When she laid her eyes upon him, it was as clear as a starry night to her that while he would have a string of victories now, his future would be destroyed by the same burning wheel she once saw if he continued onto his current path. She pondered briefly if she should tell the whole truth, a thought that was dashed to pieces when she met his self assured smirk and realized that he would take worse to being lied to and would have no trouble reading her. Hence, she told him the truth, and the king only nodded and listened to her prophecy. At the end, he handed her a flask, holding a liquid that seemed like a dark piece of the sky, and told her it might help her and guide her back to him. She took his gift only because she had a hunch how it would guide her back. She wore it close to her heart as she made her way out, unaware for one time in her life that she was being followed. Her long forgotten father stalked her, having since devoted his life to Altair instead, and overcome with rage he shot her down, aiming to leave her to die out in the Badlands. It shattered the glass vial, and allowed the creature within to take part of the blow instead, leaving Passarella in a half-alive state to converse with a long awaited friend. rzBRAu6.png
2L67gop.png The creature in the flask’s first words to her were that they were surprised, amused even. They hadn’t met a dragon before that was so strangely happy to see them, and felt so willing to speak to them. Passarella could only respond she had been waiting for a long time, and that it felt only right. The offer to merge came from her lips immediately after, something the flask-Shade had to give thought on the long and arduous drag to Axiom. Passarella waited and quietly detailed her life to them, while the Shade listened. When May first spoke to them, tending to them in Axiom’s sick ward, a joint relief rang between the both of them. It solidified the Shade’s decision, now dubbed Rat for the skittering feel of their being, to merge with Passarella. Both of them wanted to see the world and experience joy and love, with Rat approaching this subject with curious wonder, and Passarella desiring this with a longing she had since her youth. The two didn’t merge completely, and dubbed it an ongoing process, but it was enough for the joyful presence of the Rat King to be born.
