Biography
I come from Ridiam's Lair
(Please don't exalt, Ridiam will take me back!)
Discovery of Flowers
On another of his many quests, Hugo wandered into a softly lit cave strewn with flowers and pieces of gems. Supposedly there's treasure to be found in this cave and so far it is very beautiful but no self evident treasure chests have revealed themselves yet. A soft chirping noise as of a hatchling came from one of the heaps of pink flowers. Was this the right cave? He brushed some of the petals out of the way and looked straight into 2 green eyes before getting bitten in the face by an angry flower. This definitely was not the treasure he was seeking but it seemed to be hungry as deduced by the fact that it was angrily gnawing at his elbow now. "Alright Flowers, let's go get you some food then," he sighed. Maybe next time there will less ravenous treasures.
Dianthus
Dianthus is a jewelled flower coatl. It is said that these coatls hatch from flowers instead of eggs while others argue that their gems are derived from their eggshells. It is also believed that their green eyes derive from the chlorophyll of the leaves from their flowers
Off course, those are all just myths as these coatls are rather rare. This is because of their many specific needs when it comes to breeding and hatching their young. Hatchlings do seem to emerge from the flower petals covering their nest which is what lead to all the confusion. Mother's must find an appropriately sized cave with star moss and the flowers of their choosing. Nests are built from the soft moss and lined with the fragrant lilies, roses or whichever flowers the mother prefers. For Dianthus's clutch his mother gathered Jumiper, Dianthus and Allium flowers. It is customary for the hatchlings to be named after these flowers for good luck .
Fathers must collect shavings of stalactites or stalagmites to put in the nest as well. These hard rocks or gems are important as they will bond to the coatls once hatched and serve as protective "scales" to shield these soft feathery dragons. It is also said that the amount of stalactites to stalagmites can influence the gender ratios of a clutch but this is uncertain. ~ Ridiam :P
Dianthus settled right into our clan as soon as we got him plenty of food. He does have quite the appetite at times but we have more than enough to feed all here and then some. He obviously took to Hugo immediately. Often following the older and larger dragon around the library. Hugo ended up giving the flowery creature a scarf that he wears happily amongst his violets. His feathers are super soft, like flower petals so he is not suitable for adventuring or battle. However he is an enormous help in the library and makes absolutely lovely illustrations for our books.
