The Mirror of Algidir
Origin Magical Phenomenon - Deep Within the Rose Through the millennia, spirits have gathered in the Heart of the Rose, one by one adding to the power of the mountain. The first of them entered long ago. The Mirror remembers. His hands were cold. He had carved spheres and slick surfaces in the hidden quartz center that lay deep in the granite shell of the mountain. It remembered the love as the tools shaped the fragments other miners had carved from him. It was the artist's hands which woke him from a slumber that had lasted time immemorial, only some small days before the Loss. At first, the man came regularly. The roses embroidered upon his robes were delicate. The hair upon his head grew long then fled from his brows. The scars upon his hands multiplied. His visits became rarer and the mountain grew tired again. On the day it had felt the calamity, the artist had come. He had at first sat in silence, staring at the crystal around him without seeing. Then, his eyes focused on his own reflection. "They're gone." The words had echoed. Hollow mountain, hollow words for the quake of Engine which wiped civilization from the land. It could feel the emptiness. Hollow words, hollow mountain, hollow world. From somewhere inside the stone, a thought flickered. Home. The man did not hear it, of course. Men did not hear the stone. It wished in that moment to heal the shattered bedrock of the man. It knew better. Only time could erase such fissures. Men did not have time. He was crying. He was sobbing, leaping to his feet, beating his fists against the walls and screaming so loud the stone might crack too. It wished again to heal. It couldn't heal. But... there was one thing it might do. The man had collapsed against his own reflection, the slick stone he himself had shaped cool and welcoming. He again caught sight of his own reflection. There was something more to it now. It was looking back at him. It reached out to touch his hand. It pulled him in. They were here now. The It before had given them time. The It before had given them a home. They were still so... lonely. Magic surged outwards from the crystal well, transforming the stone as it went. The mountain bloomed into jagged petals of blue. The Rose was born. They called. Come home. |

The Imperial
He had heard the call so very long ago. Elderly then, cold then, ready to die... he had surrendered to it. It had been beyond alien. Perhaps it had not been dragon. But now, they were dragon, and stone, and man.
Telmaru
She ruled as a Queen once she had found the gift they left for her. She was not so easily taken in by the call to home. She wrapped the magic in clever names and instead convinced dozens of her own to submit to it. The Well, she called it. They were glad for Telmaru and for the many minds she gifted them. Telmaru... Queen of the Rose, the miner turned empress who dominated the frozen land and beat back the Banescales. But one day the Mirror caught her. She was alone in the depths and her eyes met her own. Then the Queen slept, her claws ever sharpened.
Platinum
It had been millennia since the last fool had wandered the Rose. Telmaru hadn't liked her. They had never melded with the Queen and her anger had driven many who might come home. She did it on purpose, rejecting the maleness within the stone, rejecting the human, rejecting the mountain. But Platinum... she was kind. Within the stone and the thousands of voices she found the power and used it. It was gentle. It was a love of family that reminded the Mirror of the Men who had been... sometimes she would even feel their grief. She was not trapped. Instead, when she was old, she had come willingly to her reflection and reached inside, embracing them.
