"..from the stars we are born, and to the stars we shall return." — Arcane monk

━━━━━━━━━━
Zaymo's pink eyes could not have been filled with more unbridled adoration than when their two eggs started to shake. They watched with shaky hands, excitement bubbling deep inside their abdomen. The first one to poke their head out of their shell was Casmir, eager to start munching on his egg's walls and stumble closer to his parent with a soft giggle when he would topple over his limbs. The second egg gently wobbled, the energy unparalleled to Casmir. Cautious, scared, testing the waters by gently poking at the inside of the egg. Casmir's eyes were quickly drawn to his sister's egg, still unscathed as it laid in patience for Zae's confidence. But Casmir was too excited to see what his sister looked like to accommodate for her anxiety, drawing away from his parent and circling the perfectly-still egg. "Hey, are you gonna come out?" His already-sharp talon clicked against the light pink shell. Zae kicked her foot at it, recoiling into herself to avoid her brother trying to coax her out. "Settle down, little one. Some children take longer than others and that is completely normal," Zaymo gently approaches Casmir, picking him up in their arms. And although the walls of her egg seemed to be the safest place for her, Zae longed to see what the dragon with such a soft voice looked like. Carefully tracing a circle above her and bunting into it twice, Zae's head finally pops out to be greeted by her parent and brother. "Hello there, love," Zaymo beams, a smile pulling on their cheeks. Zae smiles back, carefully placing her hands on the ground to slither out of the egg fully.
Although Casmir and Zae were hatched only moments apart, they couldn't be any different than the other if they tried. While Zae was quiet and reserved, keeping to the corners and avoiding conflicts when they arose; Casmir was quick-witted with a matching temper, and no fear when putting arrogant dragons in their place. Only after they finally entered into the schooling system in the clan is when their differences helped them work together. Casmir would shield Zae from the cattiness of school gossip and the rowdiness of the courtyard, while Zae would help Casmir with his schoolwork and how to talk to girls (not that Zae had a clue in the first place, but her brother didn't need to know that). After classes, Casmir would go to the ravine close by to hang out with the multiple friends he's gained throughout the year and Zae would walk home, eager to press her nose back into the novel she was reading. With her heads in the clouds it was hard for her to pay attention to her surroundings, relying on muscle memory to get her home safely while her thoughts traveled from topic to topic, creating worlds and solar systems behind her forehead. "Hi, Z!" she said, greeting her parent as she dropped her bag, throwing her arms around Zaymo and sighing into their shoulder. A soft chuckle and a "Hi, Zae" was returned. Zaymo was busy in the kitchen, throwing together the Ladybug Salad their kids always asked for dinner. Zae threw a glance to the bowl Zaymo turned away from to hug her and smiled before departing to her room. When Casmir finally came home with his stories about the adventure he and his friends got up to, Zae and Zaymo were already sitting on the pillows in the den with a bowlful of food, one bowl positioned in front of Casmir's seat.

Entering the coliseum was nerve-racking for Zae to say the least, but unsurprisingly exciting for Casmir. They started in the training grounds as generations have done before them, listening to their parent as they provided tips. After a while of endless chatter, Zae drowned out all noises around her, her eyes focused on Zaymo. She didn't know how her parent could be so strong on wobbly legs, keeping balance only by prayer as their talons ripped into the enemies. Casmir glanced over to Zae, watching her eyes twinkle with admiration. A small smile graced his face at seeing his sister in a state of calm after her anxious arrival to the coliseum. But that was soon short lived as the Webwing Alpha's claws dig into Zae's arm while she's distracted. On instinct she retracts her limb, jumping back from the enemy, and dropping her pearl. Three pairs of eyes watch as the ball rolls across the field until Casmir surges forwards to grab at it. His fingers wrap around the pearl, but his grasp wasn't tight enough and he ends up pushing it to the side where it bounces off of a rock. He stares in horror as the left side cracks and splits away. A gasp from Zaymo is heard behind him as they quickly slay the enemy before scooping up their daughter's broken pearl. Fear wraps around Zaymo's abdomen as they peer down to it, chiding themself for not putting their pearls to the side before battle. All three of them remain silent on the way home and all of them deal with the same throat-clenching guilt that accompanies a less-than-perfect pearl. Finally coming to rest inside of the den to discuss what happened, Zae is the first to speak. "I'm sorry," she says softly, holding back the tears that are threatening to breach. Zaymo's head reels up to look at their daughter. "I'm the one that should be apologizing, Zae," they say with a sigh, "It was my negligence that caused the accident." Casmir stewed quietly, too quietly for his character. Zae shook her head, capturing her tail between her fingers to make up for the painfully empty feeling her hands have. "It's okay, at least I didn't lose it... A broken pearl is better than no pearl, right?" Zaymo stares at the cracked pearl in her hands. "Pearls are the most important thing to our breed, a broken pearl is a broken identity. If not to you, then to others. Can you handle how our kind will treat you?" Zae swallows thickly, running her fingers over her tail to soothe the anxiety coursing in her veins. She nods, her eyes reaching her parent's. Zaymo wordlessly places the sphere into Zae's hands. Her fingers run over the cracks that stained the pearl, a tear escaping her eye. Zaymo frowns, wiping the tear with her thumb. "We'll talk more tomorrow, both of you get some rest. I love you." Zae softly shuffles to her room, her head dipped as she falls onto her bed. Within a minute of her entering, Casmir is at her door. "Can I come in?" She gently nods back and Casmir wastes no time to be by his sister's side. There's a brief period of silence as Casmir works over the words in his head before finally speaking. "Let's trade pearls." Zae's eyes dart to her brother, an unspoken question looming behind them. "That way if someone has something to say, it'll be directed to me. They will have to go through me to get to you and no one's going to get to you." He places his pearl next to Zae. She stares at it for moment, processing his words for another. "But pearls are our essence," she starts, "I can't just steal yours from you." Casmir barks out a laugh. "It's not stealing, sis." He smiles gently at her. "Plus this way, you'll always have a piece of me with you for protection." Hesitantly, Zae picks up his pearl and examines it, turning it over in her hands a few times. "Are you sure you're okay with this?" Casmir nods back at her, plucking her pearl into his hands and mirroring his sister by bringing it to his chest. "I've decided on my role for the clan and it would be nice to have something that reminds me of you when I'm away from home. It works out for the both of us." And his words held weight that Zae couldn't begin to describe. A few months later and Casmir slipped into his role of a traveler, bringing home goodies he found on his trips as well as stories of what happened while he was away. Zae became a part of the royal guard, calling on her brother's pearl for not only protection, but the strength she lacked for most of her life.
