Unaware of the situation, the butter-colored caiman flicked out one tongue and gave its eyeball a good, healthy lick. It lifted its head from the rock and peered suspiciously at the imperial perched at the edge of the pond.

“Just wait a single moment,” Mignardise insisted. She gently stroked her brush across a canvas, drawing out the lines and elegant curves of a masterpiece. Her work depicted, strangely enough, two humans dancing together in a majestic ballroom. A frown rested on her face as she meticulously painted each and every detail. It had to shine. If it didn’t, the magic would fail.

At last, she dropped her brush and stepped away from the painting. She tilted her head, inspecting it for mistakes or mishaps, but upon finding none --

“This’ll show those ladies!” she exclaimed triumphantly. “A dragon can go to tea.”

Mignardise gathered her magic in her hands and with a great, big whoop! -- she cast her spell into the aether.

Magic wrapped around her form and that of her dearest pet. In a swirling, sickening moment, they changed, in flashes and puffs of smoke, into the two humans depicted in the painting.

The caiman-man croaked. Mignardise glared hard, strutting over -- or at least attempting to, given how wobbly it was having two legs of all things -- and snatching her companion’s hand. She tugged and led the two of them up the stone path toward the castle proper.

“Just stand still and keep quiet,” Mignardise instructed. “No words, no nothing. Just sit there and sun yourself in the window, you hear?”

A croak in response. It picked at its tunic and its eyes rolled in their sockets. The caiman did not like this, not one bit.

Mignardise paid no mind. Her plans always worked.

They entered the castle’s tea room and confronted the older human women who had insisted quite rudely that dragons could not, in fact, go to tea, or do anything of the sort. It was unseemly. Dragons were simply too large to fit in a proper tea room.

Well, now Mignardise fit. Her dress was the most beautiful, overflowing with flowers, and her companion was dashing and handsome and licking his own eyeballs --

(Because she hadn’t painted a normal tongue. She’d be chastising herself for that later.)

“You look very…” the oldest one coughed. “Different.”

“Are you having trouble walking, dear?” another asked.

“Thank you and very much so,” said Mignardise. “Now, why don’t we all have some tea?”

The ladies began to titter and bustle, pouring out the tea for their new ‘friend.’ They eyed her skeptically over their elongated, passive-aggressive sips of tea. Mignardise paid no mind, only sat herself in a free chair and relaxed, finally off her strange new legs.

“Now, why don’t we do some gossiping as well?” Mignardise asked. “That’s proper, isn’t it?”

“I suppose,” one of the ladies offered. They exchanged glances. “Well, haven’t you heard about Martha and -- My goodness gracious!”

The caiman slammed his body onto the table. It was a miracle the furniture survived. He cavorted on top of the old oak, sending the table cloth flying, snapping with sharp teeth at the sweets and treats located at the center, his body hideously contorted and his eyes wide and rolling and the ladies were shrieking now, and fainting, and he was still crawling about eating and licking his eyeballs.

“Butters!” Mignardise shouted. “Butters, that’s not good etiquette!”

But Butters did not listen. He crawled around on the floor, sniffing at skirts, absolutely sugar-mad from the cupcakes. He licked at spilled tea before croaking loudly.

The guardsmen arrived and Mignardise fled, grabbing Butters the Caiman by the arm and scrambling out for open air. She let go of the spell, flying into freedom, leaving the castle and the tittering tea ladies behind. She’d have to find another challenge now. That was a great big failure, but Mignardise was not diminished. She would find her tea time ladies, and she would enjoy it.

Maybe not with Butters.

Unaware of the situation, the butter-colored caiman flicked out one tongue and gave its eyeball a good, healthy lick.
