It was scary in the Auction House, the little Pearlcatcher thought with a shudder. She couldn't make a sound in protest as her parents cast her off with looks ranging from disdain to disgust. She was worthless in their eyes, a failure.
All because she couldn't speak.
She didn't even have a pearl of her own, like the others she seen of her kind had. It made her feel incomplete.
She had lost track of time while sitting there, torn to her heart. Clans would look at her, but then walk on by, seeing better down the way. Her self-worth was shattered with each pass-by...
But then one day, there SHE was there, standing before the little Pealcatcher. Glittering scales of obsidian and crimson, beautifully edged in the purest of platinum; long, slender horns that jutted back from her triangular shaped head, a kind, compassionate expression on her face. She looked down at her for a long moment, enough to make the smaller dragon squirm under the midnight-hued gaze, until the older dragon suddenly said, "Yes."
From that moment on, Lelei, named by the The Matriarch, had become a proud member of the Cloudwalker Clan. She was brought to the massive mountain lair through magic, her eyes huge. So many gorgeous dragons!!! So much prettier than her ugly self.
The self-loathing that hit her was clearly seen and The Matriarch leaned down so her face was inches from Lelei's. "You think you're not as pretty as the rest of them?"
Lelei started in surprise! The dragoness had read her mind?!
Khyrsaraylynx laughed softly, "Don't be alarmed, little one. There are many things I can do that would surprise you. But I think first, I can do something about your genes, if you'd like?"
Lelei wished she could speak, but instead just nodded fiercely. Khyrsaraylynx reached out a gentle paw, laying it upon the Pearlcatcher's smaller head, and began to chant. Warmth filled the young dragoness...
Moments later, The Matriarch retrieves her paw and settles back to rest on her haunches, simply staring at Lelei. The warmth gradually fades from her as she returns stares with the older dragoness. Was there something different? She didn't really feel any different. Her look turns quizzical as she cocks her head.
Khyrsaraylynx gestures towards the nearby pool in the back of the well-lit lair. Lelei wanders over to it and looks in. She leaps back in surprise!!
Her genes of Skink, Bee, and Okapi were gone!! Now she was blessed over with a new appearance! Her hide shifted in the shades of Fade and Blend, and gorgeous stripes of Thylacine now ran the length of her! She looked so pretty now!!
She looks back at Khyrsaraylynx with brilliant eyes brimming with tears, excited. The Matriarch just smiles and holds something out for her to take. As Lelei comes over and holds out her paws, Khyrsaraylynx lets the object fall. It is a softly glowing pearl of pale rose coloring. It swirls with an iridescence that makes it appear to be pulsing.
She has her own Pearl!!!!!
If she could have spoke, she would have cried her thank yous to the dragoness, but all she can do is look up at her with hope and tears within her expressive eyes. Khyrsaraylynx turns slightly, motioning over an elder Tundra male who is decked out in books, scrolls, and various sashes. "Monet, our little Lelei here cannot speak. I would like you to teach her a language she can use."
The old Tundra looks over the little Pearlcatcher with a kind eye. "Aye, lady, it would be my pleasure."
He was a patient teacher and she learned fast the art of sign language, so much so that she eventually had mastered it in less time than the older dragon's previous students. She become so good at it that she took over teaching it to the hatchlings, along with the female Tundra, Koi.
Time passed while she was there and soon it was Yule. She was teaching the newest hatchlings with Koi when another Pearlcatcher suddenly appeared right in their midst. Startled, she blinked and took a few steps as she studied it. No...not it...HE. He was dressed in an assortment of apparel, with a cute hat on his head, a scroll in his paw. A bauble hung from his tail. His pearl was shiny white. A flurry of fur pounces from between his legs and bounds over to face the hatchlings next to her. He was...handsome.
Shyly, she stands there as he talks to Koi, who is facing her way, then he turns his head and his voice trails off as he stares at her. She reaches out her paw as he extends his, taking it, then signs to him that it's a pleasure to meet him. Of course, his expression registers that he doesn't understand, but then Koi interjects, translating for her, which makes Lelei love Koi even more. As Koi explains that Lelei was about to teach the others, and that he would be welcomed to join, she grows more excited that he wants to learn!
She looks down at the same time as he does, seeing that their still holding paws, and she turns bright pink under her scales. He smiles and reluctantly releases her paw.
She blushes again and settles down to teach.
A little while later, they are sitting together at the huge bonfire, conversing in sign language. It was amazing how much he was learning from her, having a real knack for it. If he stumbled on a word, he would say it and she showed him the proper sign for it. He was amazing! He told her of his travels, places he's seen, dragons he's met, all with his familiar, Rio. She, in turn, told him about her parents casting her aside for mere treasure, and how she ended up here. He was very sympathetic of what she had gone through and she felt a warm feeling towards him seem to grow within her chest. Before she can figure out this odd feeling, three of the lair's powerful fighters had come back home, baring an enormous evergreen tree. They placed it within the very center of the immense lair.
Teiglas smiled at her and asked her if she wanted to go decorate with everyone. She nodded and, for the first time since she had received it, she released her Pearl and left it by the fire, resting side by side with his, as they got up and joined the others.
A few days had passed and almost all of the time he was visiting, they had been together. He did go off with Halloween a few times, but every time they came back, he would excuse himself to go sit with her again. Every time, they would have huge conversations in sign language as she taught him a little more. It was a pleasure to spend time with him. Even his familiar, Rio, had warmed up to her.
So when he announced sadly that it was time to go roaming again, she had seen him off like the rest of the clan, but there was a melancholy feeling deep within her heart. She was happy he was off again, doing what he loved, but sad too because her friend was leaving again with no clue when he would be back again.
She stood in the same spot all day, staring sadly off in the direction he had taken, even long after he had vanished from sight...
