Virgil

GENERATION 4
Valhalla - Bifrost - Pleione - Me

Greetings. My name is Virgil, and I have been watching you.

Hor-divider-640.png
A hatchling tumbles out of their cracked egg and onto the ground. Eight spindly legs move uselessly for a moment before pulling the hatchling to the remnants of their eggshell. Moving with an instinct passed down for millennia, the hatchling – not quite a dragon – begins to consume their own eggshell, short tusks flashing in the dim light.

The eggshell is eaten quickly and quietly, and when the hatchling is finished, they cough up a round ball of a pearly sheen. A cloven front leg holds the ball still as the hatchling places their forehead directly onto the ball’s surface. A flash of magic can be seen for miles; it lasts for only a second, and when it is finished the ball has fused with the hatchling’s forehead in a ritual as old as time.

A new Stardrape has been born.

Virgil is a Stardrape, one of an ancient race nearly lost to time and the monotony of their own lives. They took after their mother, to the delight of their father, an ordinary dragon. They barely remember their parents, only flashes: a handsome dragon with wings of gilded glass and scales of obsidian, and a beautiful creature similar to themselves, with three pairs of cloven legs and her face covered in a regal masque.

As a young Stardrape, Virgil found themselves fascinated with the night sky that had captivated their father so. They began to follow their mother and siblings to the ever-present abyss night after night, listening to her lamenting songs of their ancestor, Valhalla, who had sacrificed himself for the children and mortals he had so loved.

As they grew older, Virgil began to drift further and further away from their mother’s presence, until one day they did not return home to their father. Their mother was not surprised; she too had done the same thing, as had her other children, and her mate had been forewarned that his children would not linger. Still, he watches the night sky to this day, content in the knowledge that his children are out there, traveling the stars and keeping watch over the little planet of their birth.

Much like their siblings and unlike their distant ancestors, Virgil chose to remain close to Sornieth instead of wandering far and wide. Their attention soon became drawn to a small set of ruins some distance from their homeland.

The ruins were home to a couple, astronomers by trade and nature. Night after night, the pair would take their telescopes and gaze upon the wonders of the night sky: Praskovya, a beautiful dragoness, and her mate Cormun, who had stars in his eyes and constellations on his scales. Virgil became entranced by the pair, and every night they moved closer and closer to their home, unknowingly echoing their mother from many years ago.

One day, as she was gazing into her telescope, Praskovya spotted a strange phenomenon among the stars.

“Cormun!” the Bogsneak called excitedly. “Come look, I see something!”

Cormun raced to his mate’s side at the excited wave of her fin and gazed through her telescope. Sure enough, there was movement in the black expanse.

“What could it be?” he asked, awed. Praskovya shrugged.

“I dunno,” she answered. “Lunarya and Lunary might though.”

Much to their disappointment, the siblings did not know what it was, although they too had seen the phenomenon.

“Could be a comet,” Lunary told them, blinking through the narrow slits in his ghastcrown. Praskovya had always wondered how he could see the night sky wearing that, but always thought it impolite to ask.

“It’s probably just a meteor,” Lunarya agreed, tossing her pearl back and forth in a practiced motion. “I wouldn’t worry about it too much.”

But Praskovya and Cormun weren’t convinced.

They watched the sky eagerly the next night, and the night after, waiting for the strange sight to reappear. But it didn’t for an entire month, until one day…

“Praskovya, look!”

Praskovya looked up from her telescope and glanced over to her mate, who was excitedly gazing into his own.

“Did you find it?” she exclaimed, bounding over to the Coatl. He nodded in excitement, never looking up from the eyepiece pressed against his forehead.

“Yeah, I did, and it’s getting closer!”

Virgil – for that’s what the spectacle was – was indeed growing closer. They had been watching the pair for months now. They had hidden when first spotted, but could no longer ignore the ever-growing disappointment on the couple’s faces. It had taken over a month, but they had finally reached a decision: they would show themself to the dragons, just as their mother had done to their father all those years ago.

The pair watched, awed, as the strange entity grew closer and closer, until finally its shape could be distinguished.

It was a dragon – or at least, that was what it looked like. Its eight legs seemed to swim through the air, tail streaming out behind it like a banner. It was draped in a complex series of robes that shimmered with the shape of Sornieth’s most common constellations, dark bells and beads hanging off and clanging together with a sound not unlike that of the wind. A mask dotted with what could only be tiny stars concealed the creature’s face, and at the center, directly above its forehead, hung a small jade bead.

The couple watched in awe, telescopes forgotten by now, as the figure approached them. It opened its mouth, and to the dragons’ surprise, began to speak.

“Greetings. My name is Virgil, and I have been watching you.”

Virgil began to visit the couple near-nightly. Unlike their mother, who had visited her mate during the day, Virgil had decided that they would leave Praskovya and Cormun to their clanmates and sleep during the lighter hours, only appearing after the sun went down.

It didn’t take long before the couple fell in love with the celestial being, revealed to be one of an ancient race reborn. So one night, after a sleepless day of long discussion, they decided to confront their new friend.

“Virgil,” began Praskovya, ever the brave one. “Cormun and I have been talking, and we would like to include you in our relationship.”

Virgil blinked their hidden eyes and swung their head over to Cormun, who nodded in agreement. Warmth blossomed in their chest. Truth be told, they had never thought about following in their mother’s footsteps and taking a dragon as a mate. But now that the opportunity had been handed to them, and with a couple of dragons such as these?

“I accept,” Virgil said, and smiled.
