The earth split in two, a mighty groan rumbling in great tremors through the ground, and a gap was formed. A bridge would be strung up not even three months later, to aid dragons not flying that need to cross the gap. The crack revealed many ores, quickly gathered by miners, and sold on the market. Most of the valuable ores had been snatched the moment they had been discovered, and anything that didn't glimmer was over looked.
An old miner, a tundra, made his way down into the depths one early morning, the sun only just shining into the ravine. It was enough to light the way, as well as the lamp he held between his jaws. He collected what little of the precious gems that were too difficult to pry out of hard, compact earth, cleaning them in little streams, and placing them in a satchel at his side.
There was a crack, and he froze, eyes darting up to the top of the split. Where had it come from? Another crack, but it seemed to be close, and not from the ragged walls. He padded down the thin path, guided by the noises, until he turned a corner, and a faint glow caught his eyes. A pulsing orange, and he realised it was an egg. How did an egg get down here? It seemed wedged in the walls no less, surrounded by centuries old stone and dirt. But it was an earth egg for sure, the shape and texture could not be mistaken for something else.
Then it cracked again, and a piece fell away. He saw an eye staring at him though it, brown and glimmering. Then, it blinked, and the pupil morphed into a sideways bar. A goat eye. More pieces fell away, and then a head poked out. A tiny fae, and the skin of it were anything but normal. Brown, cracked and hard, like the earth around it. He scooped the little thing into his arms, and a small smile came across his face. His children were long grown and fledged, he was lonely alone. And she would die down here. Gathering his possessions, he headed up to the top of the split, glancing down at the gems. He had found some good things today, but this little one was his best find.
