There's just something about old history that draws Shulmah's interest. He is fascinated by fables, myths, and legends, and loves learning about the past. Shulmah's professional demeanour changes when he comes across an ancient piece of history, where he becomes more like an excited hatchling. The Ashfall Wastes are still a sore spot for him and he prefers not to talk about it.

Shulmah and Harrow have been best friends since childhood and are very close as a result. He soothes her temper and she listens to his excited ramblings with fondness. They are perhaps the very definition of best friends. Shulmah is well educated on many different languages and is impressed by Morgan's vast understanding of linguistics. His rough upbringing has left the Banescale with a love of simple luxuries, such as a warm, cosy den and good food.

Despite his lack of interest in battle, Shulmah knows how to hold his own in a fight. An old injury from his youth prevents him from flying so he relies on his strong legs to dispatch his enemies, which is then followed by roasting them with fire to finish them off.

As a new addition to the outpost, Shulmah is still settling in but is rather excited about meeting other dragons who share his interests. Both he and Drake are fascinated by ancient stuff and are becoming fast friends. Shulmah also shares his love of history with Briar, and the two often sit in the Coatl's sweltering library talking for hours on end. The Banescale is a lover of music, and his gentle yet melancholic voice is perfectly suited for singing the lullabies from the ancient stories that he studies.
