Several miles offshore of the Viridian Labyrinth...

A sudden disturbance ripples through the strands of kelp and a section of the sea floor seems to peel away, sand uncovering sharklike skin with a flick of the sentry’s tail. Kelp tangles in its spines as the biomechanical creature soundlessly propels itself toward the latest intruder, tightening its grip on the harpoon gun.

There: a shape diving down, swimming between two of the pylons marking the outskirts of the Vigilance. A slight surge of electricity- too weak to be detected by any creature with less acute senses- passes through the water as the ridgeback swims across the boundary, headed straight for the portal buoy. Even from a distance, Adriana's silhouette against the morning light is one Cybele recognizes easily. Not an intruder, then. It disappears back into the kelp before Adriana ever gets a glimpse of it.

It’s evening now, and the sentry is busy chasing an octopus along the trench wall, pretending to lose interest for a few seconds every time the creature camouflages itself. The octopus’s body may not be discernible from the surrounding rock, but the electric field it generates might as well be a beacon.

Cybele’s hunt is cut short by the distinctive signal of something passing across the border again- something large. Whatever this is, it wasn’t scheduled. The sentry darts up and out of the trench, its long body coiling as it scans the open ocean. A shape disturbs the water’s surface, and not one the sentry recognizes. A jolt of excitement runs down its spine. It shoots a quick message to the Vigilance alerting them of the trespasser, then uncoils in a cloud of sand and swims silently toward the unfamiliar form above. Perhaps today will be a fun day after all.
