A powerful cry was suddenly heard from the nest, and Topaz started. The third hatchling was clapping their tiny talons together and showing all their teeth in a grin. When they saw Topaz watching, they reached up to be picked up, too. Shaking a little, Topaz reached down to pick them up, holding them as if they might break. The hatchling, warm as sunlight, threw tiny talons around his neck and squealed.
Flawa's voice surrounded them both, and Topaz felt the gust of warmth. "This hatchling is for joy," she said, her words singing. "Though things may not always be easy, may you find happiness in the everyday, the little moments." Topaz and Pearl both looked up, feeling the sun warm their faces.
They both knew what was to come next.
"I'll have to go now," Flawa's voice sang, "I love you all." Topaz opened his mouth as if to speak, but Pearl only nodded. Her smile was bittersweet. The warm little hatchling put their hand in Topaz's open mouth.
The wind whirled around the five of them - parents and children - one more time, engulfing them in peace and hope and joy and a warm hug. Then it was gone - the day was sunny, the sky was cloudless, and the bamboo stalks were still.
A beautiful day.
