Gambit doesn't remember where he came from, nor does he really care.

He remembers flashes of his past, but not enough to piece into anything cohesive and then waking up one day to an unusually furry guardian on the side of the road prodding at him with his cane asking him if he was okay.

After it was established that he wasn't dead, Shulgaar helped him get to the nearby settlement of Knapspark where he could rest before making his way to New Sunstone

He ended up finding work with Hawke in the Echo Market as a debt collector later on.

The whole "not exactly a dragon" thing makes his job fairly easy. Strange automaton shows up asking about money, then turns out it was sent by Hawke? Most folks pay up.
