CALYPSO
Herbalist and Natural Healer
You are not truly intelligent until you are not afraid to be proven wrong.
7ZHCA1U.png
naturev4.png The warm sound of amber dropper bottles combines with the sharp scent of essential oils. I hear my talons click on the weathered tile as I saunter towards my patient. I am no intellectual; I am a healer. The crumpled fae lying on the bed before me stares out the wood-framed window into the bloodstained sunset. She flutters her wings, trying to escape the oak table. I slam my warped palm into her wing and she quickly falls with a heavy shudder.

"I shall call you Fortune," I tell the child, "because it is the Lightweaver's miracle that you survived."

My lips curl into a sort of dazed drawl as I pour a solution on her damaged wings. I can see color, although I cannot make out the shape the way I used to. Dull green is outstretched in front of me. Fortune looks up at me with large eyes.

"Why do your eyes dance over me, even when I am ill?" she asks. "Why do you seem entertained by me? You only see injury, not dragons."

I sigh, pinching her wing to move it across the table as if it is some sort of filthy item, not to be touched. Lolock would never behave in such an egregious manner.

"To me, injuries are dragons," I say flatly. I slide my limp wrist across the table to flick her talon. Her entire shoulder cracks and bounces in reflex.

"Why doesn't your arm work?" she asks.

"You ask far too many questions, child," I spit.

The truth of the matter is that I do care for dragons, much more than I care for mystery and diagnosis. However, compassion is an invitation for others to take advantage of you. I am centered back to the room when Fortune claws at my arm. Too late, I look down, flapping my wings in mild alarm as I move away from the table. The child rolled herself off of the table and is now sitting in a leathery heap on my foot. I shake her off, a grimace tearing across my face as I look into her large, glassy eyes.

"Don't pretend to hate me. You only hate yourself," she says.

I thought I hated her. But the young dragon was right. I never spoke to her again, although I hear she still lives among us, now guilty to have treated me so poorly after I healed her wing. I ponder her daily; maybe when Sun stops turning a blind eye to Peregrine's corrupted nature, maybe when the Amber Vale falls to ruin, we will meet again. But until then, I must be content with being proven wrong.
