The Scion of Death

The rough rasp of Noctis'Timore's voice whispered off of the walls. "What is your destiny?"

Severus'Rex felt a surge of power roar through his body. He took a deep breath and felt his eagerness boiling inside his veins. His lips pulled away in a smile, unable to cage it. "I will see to your will..."

Severus'Rex fixed his gaze onto his father's wicked countenance. "The will of death..."

Noctis'Timore's tongue ran over his fangs. His eyes drifted toward the open air beyond the crystalline threshold. The roar of the ocean was competing with the howl of the winds. Shrill wails of the wind rushed between the crystal fangs that lined the opening to the outside.

Noctis'Timore clicked his tongue. "How shall you accomplish this? There are those... rebellious... souls that would defy you..."

A snort erupted from Severus'Rex's flared nostrils. "Everything has its limit, even the Shade. Those that would defy me would quickly learn such a lesson; just as you have taught Dragon, Beastclan, and Shadebeast alike."

Noctis'Timore hummed, "Arrogant words. What of your limit?"

Severus'Rex rolled his shoulders. "Then my body is destroyed or sent to one of those foolish Elemental Titans as an Exalted Soldier. My soul is already in your keeping. What of it?"

Noctis'Timore burst into a fit of laughter. The feathers of his headdress fluttered and the loose layers of his dark shroud rustled from his merriment. His laughter bounced off the dark crystal walls. There was a harsh sound of metal scraping across the crystal floor. Noctis’Timore’s tail was swaying side to side.

“Well said,” said Noctis’Timore, “It is time. Phantasma’Oculi and Grimfang await you in the depths of the Starwood Strand.”

Noctis'Timore's head snapped in the direction of the howling wind. Severus'Rex launched into a sprint before even the first rattle of the bones on Noctis’Timore’s wings sounded. Severus'Rex raced to rendezvous with his two siblings. All was going to plan, he was finally free to do as he wished and in turn he freed Phantasma'Oculi.

There was no heartfelt reunion when Severus'Rex found his siblings in a starwood grove. Phantasma'Oculi merely nodded to Severus'Rex before she turned away and flew off into the unknown.

Grimfang shook his head. He asked, "How could you just let Phantasma'Oculi leave like that?"

A snort erupted from Severus'Rex's nostrils. His lip curled and he flicked his left ear. "She wasn't bound to me, nor I to her. Our sister is free to die as she wishes."

Grimfang's jaw fell open. His paws stopped and his back stiffened. "Are you not worried about her?"

Severus'Rex tilted his head. "Not in the least. Just like you and I, her soul belongs to our father. We may as well have said farewell to a corpse. She hatched from the same nest as Lucidus'Mors... our older brother that went mad... We do not need that same bad luck following us."

"Us," answered Grimfang, "You say that as if I am going to go with you."

Severus'Rex worked hard to keep from laughing. He settled for a vile grin. His eyes glittered as his brow furrowed. His voice softened into a croon. "Do you have a choice? Unlike our sister, you have absolutely no experience outside of the Hallowed Hall."

Grimfang dug his claws into the vibrant green grasses at his paws. His wings fanned outward. "That is not true!"

Severus'Rex purred. "Hunting for Ascendant candidates alone is not the same, baby brother. Hmph. What has you so bothered, I wonder?"

Grimfang bared his teeth at Severus'Rex. His claws left deep gouge marks in the ground as he stomped forward. He smashed his snout against Severus'Rex's flared nostrils. Grimfang growled. "We are finally free of the Hallowed Hall! We can do whatever we want! Why are you so determined to find Ascendant candidates?"

Severus'Rex chuckled. "You ask me that now? Took you long enough... Although you seem to forget..."

Grimfang lashed out his right forepaw and caught Severus'Rex over his left eye. Severus'Rex was about to react but he saw Grimfang's remorse immediately. This development kept Severus'Rex smiling. It was so easy to intimidate his baby brother into submission.

Grimfang whispered, "S-S-Severus...!"

Severus'Rex's bone chilling smile did not stop. He leered closer to Grimfang and slammed his forepaws down on Grimfang's bowed head. Grimfang whimpered when his head smashed into the grassy ground. He snorted and spat to free his nostrils and mouth of grassy dirt. His body twisted around on itself to kick his back paws at Severus'Rex. Severus'Rex backed off with a chuckle.

Grimfang coughed as he caught his breath. He glared up at his brother. His glare did not stay however when he rubbed his aching head.

Severus'Rex used his right forepaw to lift Grimfang's head to force eye contact. Severus'Rex hummed, "As I was saying... you forget that you owe me. I didn't have to petition Father to allow you to join me and Phantasma'Oculi."

Severus'Rex's claws dug into Grimfang. "So remember your place...baby brother."

Grimfang whispered, "I spoke out of turn. Forgive me. I am grateful that you got me out of there."

Severus'Rex nodded. "You are forgiven. It would be a shame to have seen you go through Ascendance."

Grimfang shuddered and shook his head. He bounded after his brother. "But wait! Brother! Why do you aim to find more Ascendant?"

Severus'Rex purred. "Power... Do you really expect me to just wander Sornieth aimlessly? Ha! No... I will make a name for myself...! Dragons will flock to my side and I will surpass Father!"

Severus'Rex focused on the path forward and whispered, "I refuse to remain the weak one..."

They all lived in the shadow of their father back at the Hallowed Hall but there were others that were also vying for Noctis'Timore's favor. Severus'Rex felt that power disparity tremendously when he was constantly out paced by their older brother Tenebris'Cor. That Skydancer made Severus'Rex's blood boil in jealous fury. That was why he needed to leave. There was no way out of Tenebris'Cor's shadow inside the Hallowed Hall. However out in the wilds of Sornieth; there was opportunity.

And opportunity came knocking in the form of a wayward Spiral trapped by a massive Hydra. The great multi-headed serpent was coiled around the Spiral, ready to bite. The incident was so fast paced that Severus'Rex could only utter a curse at his brother's back when the fool rushed to the Spiral's rescue.

Grimfang leapt at the Hydra and caught the beast off guard by slamming one head into the other two. The Hydra's thunderous roar rattled everyone's ears. Grimfang twisted midair to open his wings. He flapped to go at the Hydra again. His claws dug into the left eye ridge of one of the Hydra's heads. The Hydra shrieked and threw Grimfang off.

Grimfang gasped when he hit the ground hard. He looked up and expected the Hydra to be right there, however the beast slithered off and was already gone.

Severus'Rex walked near Grimfang and stared with a small curl to his lip. Severus'Rex purred, "Well, well..."

Before Severus'Rex could speak further the Spiral squealed and launched herself at Grimfang. She coiled around him and hugged his head. Her voice spoke at an absurdly rapid rate, "Oh my gosh! I thought I was dead! Thank you! Thank you! Oh! I should reward you! But wait! I don't have anything! AH, the clan will! Come, come!"

Grimfang gasped, "W-Wait!"

Before they knew it, Grimfang was being harried off by the Spiral. He tried to look to Severus'Rex for help but only found a mocking gaze.

Severus'Rex purred, "This is what you get for playing hero."

The Spiral took Grimfang and Severus'Rex to a small clan situated within the Starwood Strand. It was a humble camp, with barely any infrastructure. What structures there were; looked like a giant monster just smashed them to pieces. Dragons eyed Grimfang and Severus'Rex with wary stares. Mothers gathered their hatchlings close and elder dragons whispered to each other.

The Spiral harried Grimfang closer to the center of the camp where a Guardian and several other dragons were gathered. The Guardian spoke first, "I wondered where you got to Silvia. Who are these two Mirrors?"

The Spiral named Silvia turned to Grimfang and Severus'Rex. "Uh... I don't know! But he saved me from the Hydra!"

Grimfang looked around at the camp when a tense silence overtook the dragons. He flicked his ear when he heard Severus'Rex chuckle to himself. Grimfang turned his head to the Guardian. "I am Grimfang, this is my older brother Severus'Rex. Yeah, I saved this Spiral girl from a Hydra... Uh, this camp... has it been attacked recently?"

The Guardian sighed heavily. "Yes, to my great shame. We are plagued by a local Hydra that is not pleased with our presence in this vale. We've tried to fight it off to no avail. So to hear that you fought it off is heartening."

A Ridgeback spoke up, "Should you be saying so much to strangers?"

The Guardian's fins stiffened. "What would you have me do? Treat this brave soul with hostility? He saved little Silvia, surely that warrants at least a little gratitude?"

Grimfang tilted his head. "Gratitude is not necessary-"

Severus'Rex coughed and jabbed Grimfang with a paw. He stepped forward. His voice rippled with warmth, "A place for a brief respite would be appreciated."

Grimfang looked at his brother, shocked that such a civil tone could come out of Severus'Rex's mouth.

The Guardian sighed. "We do not have much, but a place to rest your paws is something we can do."

Severus'Rex purred, "Perfect."

When Grimfang and Severus'Rex settled off in a secluded area of the camp, Grimfang studied his brother. His forepaws flexed and his gaze shifted.

Severus'Rex chuckled. "What?"

Grimfang straightened his back. "I want to take care of this Hydra problem for these dragons."

Severus'Rex blinked. "Why?"

Grimfang frowned. His tail tip flicked side to side. "Have you seen them? They're dying. Look at how little warriors there are in this camp."

Severus'Rex cast a glance around the camp. He yawned and stretched out. "What does that matter to me? Let the Hydra devour them for all I care."

Grimfang hissed, "You don't believe that."

Severus'Rex snorted. "No? Watch. The Hydra will attack this camp again and I am not going to lift a single paw when it does."

Grimfang felt his stomach twist. He looked at the camp then back at his brother. "But... How are you going to get more power with that kind of attitude?"

Severus'Rex narrowed his eyes. He could only wonder, how indeed.

Grimfang crawled closer with his eyes glittering brightly. "Think about it," he hissed, "If we saved them... they'd be indebted to us right? Well... we could use that debt. Just like how you're using my debt to you. You just need to see things at the right scale, brother. You're thinking too much about the big picture that you've forgotten the tiny steps needed to start."

Oh you fool, thought Severus'Rex. He smiled and his eyes gleamed. "I knew there was a reason why I saved you... There is a brain in that pretty head. Good work Grimfang, you've successfully convinced me... I will join you in this Hydra hunt."

As Severus'Rex predicted, the Hydra did return to the camp of the clan they were resting with. The clan was called Starvale, in honor of the land they settled in within the Starwood strand. Chaos erupted as the clan desperately tried to keep the Hydra away from the hatchlings and elders. Severus'Rex separated himself from the chaos to observe the situation from a safe distance. Like the bleeding heart that he was, Grimfang was preoccupied with the Hydra. Severus'Rex couldn't decide whether he liked or hated his brother for that habit.

Severus'Rex was torn from his musings by the soft gasp of the Spiral named Silvia.

"Mister Rex," said Silvia, "The Hydra! You got to help Grimfang!"

Severus'Rex watched the little Spiral for a few silent moments, only listening to the frustrated shrieks of the Hydra. This was precisely the reason why he left the Hallowed Hall. To take advantage of the misfortunes that fell upon the weak. He could not afford to be weak. In the past, he talked big, but there was little action to back it up.

It was time.

It was time to cut away all doubt and weakness. The first step would be to sever his tie to Grimfang. The bleeding heart would only drag him down.

"Ah yes," purred Severus'Rex, "You're absolutely right Miss Silvia. I want to help my brother but you see... I am not as much of a physical fighter. I will... need your help. May I count on your strength?"

He almost wanted to cackle with glee when Silvia nodded. He schooled his face to remain neutral, borderline grave, so that Silvia wouldn't suspect a thing. If he was going to help his brother, as he falsely claimed, then he would need a snack. The perfect morsel of blood was eagerly awaiting his next move, out of sight of the rest of the panicking Starvale clan.

He struck, swift and merciless. In mere moments, Silvia was reduced to a corpse drained of her blood. Severus'Rex felt strength raging through his body and he rushed the dragons of Starvale Clan. In the chaos it took too long for them to realize that he was attacking them. Severus'Rex was quick in his rampage, as everything seemed to slow down around him. He eliminated the threats. The last to fall was the Guardian, the leader.

The Guardian lay gasping. His eyes focused on Severus'Rex with agony. "Why...?"

Severus'Rex smiled. "Mercy. Your clan was doomed to die with so little warriors at your disposal. Take heart! I will be the shepherd to lead your herd to glory unimaginable. Your bodies shall ascend to serve the great Arcanist that you mortals so devoutly adore!"

The Guardian hissed, "M-Monster...!"

With that, Severus'Rex lifted his right forepaw and summoned the spell Soul Bind, the precursor to the Rite of Ascendance. The souls of the Starvale dragons rushed to gather at Severus'Rex's raised forepaw. He could feel the power he took. Oh how addicting that feeling was. No wonder his father demanded such tribute.

Suddenly Severus'Rex was torn from enjoying his new found power by an agonized roar. Before he could turn around fully, Grimfang barreled into him with bloodied claws. Despite the surprise attack, Grimfang was weak from his fight with the Hydra. Severus'Rex kicked Grimfang off of him. While his brother lay to catch his breath, Severus'Rex pounced and trapped Grimfang beneath him to finish the Rite.

Severus'Rex thought, now for the finale to sever all ties to Grimfang.

"You were absolutely right Grimfang," purred Severus'Rex, "We needed to save these souls...and I am so glad you convinced me to help... These bodies will make a perfect offering to the Arcanist and their beautiful souls shall serve a high cause! Me! Oh and I suppose they will help fight the Shade! Bwahahaha!"

Grimfang stared at the bodies as the Rite was complete. The dragons that were once so full of life just that very morning stared listlessly at Severus'Rex as they rose to their paws.

Severus'Rex sighed and spoke to Grimfang, "Ah, I consider your debt to me fulfilled, baby brother. Do as you will."

Severus'Rex took his leave with the soul-less bodies of the Starvale dragons at his flanks. He sent his tribute to the Arcanist's Exalted army and resumed his journey to garner further power.

Foolish Prince
Finis the Foolish Prince
Finis was once a handsome Skydancer, a Prince of a mighty clan of dragons from the Shadow Flight. He was traveling with his entourage on one fell winter night in the Starfall Isles. Their goal was to raid Clan Sanguinem Luna for the riches rumored to lie inside the imposing crystal spire that dominated a floating island. However, once they happened upon the island of their target everything went sour. They were confronted by a lone Mirror by the name of Severus'Rex. With no intelligence on this Mirror, Finis thought that Severus'Rex was merely a plunderer also out for riches. Oh how he was wrong. Severus'Rex was savage as he dispatched Finis' entourage like a scythe to wheat. Left cowering and broken at the paws of Severus'Rex, Finis could only beg for his life to be spared. Severus'Rex chuckled, the only sound he made during the entire encounter. Grisly shadow hands materialized around Severus'Rex and reached for Finis. When Finis finally woke, he could only wail in shock. He was no longer his handsome Skydancer self, but reduced to a hideous spirit. The crown that adorns his awful physique is the only mortal belonging of his left. What once marked him as the future ruler of his clan, was now the shackles of Finis' eternal punishment for his folly.
