Crimson blood dripped and ran from knuckle to wrist. Seur chuckled and readied the sampling probe gripped between the twin digits of another arm, watching the fanged tendrils of the swamp tangler spread higher and wider in threat. Suddenly, all six of Seur’s wings flared outward, fanning. The swamp tangler froze. Quick as a ferberus’s paw the sampling probe flashed in and downward, coming away with a tiny, writhing version of the adult plant gripped in its tongs. Seur tucked the pup into the waiting bucket of damp soil and stepped away, out of reach of its parent.
“Vigorous,” the dragon remarked dryly, drawing a rolled bandage from the worn satchel nearby and applying it expertly to their wounded digit. “A suitable specimen for propagation.”
The Janustrap rooted nearby turned one broad stalk to regard its master’s movements. The other quivered, tracking the approach of a hungry sapsucker beetle. Moments later one of its lesser stems lashed out, capturing the beetle and conveying it to the wide fringed mouth.
Seur bound off the bandage end and picked up the satchel, tucking it under one arm while another lifted the bucket with the angrily snapping young swamp tangler. Crest ruffling thoughtfully, the dragon turned and made their way back up the path half overgrown by towering shrubs. Large dark purple and green leaves reached towards the tall form as it drew near, then flinched back from the eyelike markings on hip, shoulder, throat, and wing.
The Janustrap watched the dragon go, snagging and devouring a passing gall wasp. When Seur was not quite out of sight, its twin stalks turned to face one another. Then, with a great creaking and rustling, it tugged its stubby roots from the moist soil and knuckled after.
