got separated from group as kid, taken in and raised by these guys
or was exiled/banished/shunned/outcast from the group for some mistake
is a mirror-turned-sandsurge accidentally, struggling to adjust to new body and the fact that none of his clothes fit him anymore (did someone take him to go shopping to get new genes? lol)
