______ It hurt to learn that he wasn't going to see his sister anymore but little did Aurum Crystallo know that his troubles were only just beginning. He didn't blame his father or mother for his misfortunes. It is nigh impossible to resist when the Angel of Slumber attacks the nursery on Noctis Timore's orders. The event was hazy and that was more terrifying than anything.

I can barely remember their scent now, Aurum Crystallo thought. His attention was pulled from his musings by the swift pawsteps of a dragon approaching. If he was to hazard a guess then it was going to be Ridens Leo, one of the unfortunate denizens of the Hallowed Hall just like himself.

The jaunty rustle of cloth and clink of armor striking crystal drew closer. Finally a figure trotted into sight from around the corner. It was Ridens Leo, a Mirror dragon, dressed in gaudy scraps that surprisingly worked well with his myriad of scale color. His lips were pulled in a large grin when his eyes finally landed on Aurum Crystallo.

"There you are," barked Ridens Leo.

Aurum Crystallo tilted his head. "I always sleep here. What has you so bright and awake in the morning? It is morning right?"

A merry cackle burst from Ridens Leo. "Right you are buddy, the Angels are back for their beauty sleep. They brought in a fresh crop of Ascendant candidates."

Aurum Crystallo frowned. "Must you really put it like that?"

Ridens Leo snorted, "What, did I offend you? Look, think of it this way. If they bring in dragons from outside to be Ascendant candidates, then you and I aren't going to be shipped off as soulless husks."

"It still isn't right." Aurum Crystallo flexed his foreclaws. Anger burned in his veins and frustration made his heart slam into his chest. He grunted when he felt a heavy gauntlet slam into his shoulder. His eyes went to his shoulder and he rubbed where the gauntlet struck.

"You're only preaching to the choir buddy," declared Ridens Leo, "I'm his son and even I'm not immune from being turned Ascendant. That's why..."

Aurum Crystallo glared at the Mirror. "We're getting out of here."

Ridens Leo's wings slapped the ground and he bowed his head. "Way to steal my thunder..."

Ridens Leo lifted his head, his large smile back tenfold. "Look! It'll be different this time! They are going to be too busy with the new candidates! We can make it! You and I have been training."

Aurum Crystallo sighed. "You said the same thing last time...and I still have the scars from Crudelis Aegror's bites. I'm pretty sure I've actually lost feeling in the pads of my left hind paw because of her."

"Eh it's all in your head," said Ridens Leo, "You move fine. Come on! Up and at it! We need to hurry! My father isn't in his hollow, now is our chance!"

Aurum Crystallo groaned as he rose to his paws. He felt Ridens Leo pushing him, trying to hurry him up. He was finally on his paws and followed Ridens Leo through the dim crystalline halls. Every time his friend's armor clinked, Aurum Crystallo flinched and froze. He could not hide his fear of being discovered.

"Stop it," spat Ridens Leo, "You reek of fear!"

"I can't help it," retorted Aurum Crystallo, "They went easier on you last time. I took the brunt of their fury."

"Quit complaining like an old man!"

"Grow up and realize the danger we're in!"

"Shut up!"

They crouched at the mouth of the crystal tunnel they traveled in. Beyond them was the main antechamber. There were distant wails of dragons in distress but Aurum Crystallo did his best to ignore it. He knew full well the terror that those poor, confused souls were undergoing. The eerie and cruel laughter of Crudelis Aegror still haunted his memories.

"See," said Ridens Leo, "Not a soul. Quickly!"

Aurum Crystallo trot after his fleet footed friend. He almost wished that he joined Ridens Leo in those running exercises that he'd undertaken a while back. But most of the tunnels in the Hallowed Hall were not large enough to run in. A surge of excitement rushed into Aurum Crystallo when he smelled the fresh air coming from Noctis Timore's hollow. The sound of the wind was music to Aurum Crystallo's ears.

Ridens Leo panted, "Go, go, go!"

Together they barreled through the empty chamber and leapt into the cold winter winds of the Starfall Isles. The smell of the clean, windy air filled Aurum Crystallo's lungs and helped carry his body to greater heights. He couldn't help it but Aurum Crystallo released a thunderous roar of glee and relief.

"Ha," barked Ridens Leo but it soon turned into a fit of laughter. He dived and flipped through the air. "Good bye you filthy Hallowed Halls and HELLO FREEDOM!"
